KJH Re-Designated as School to Watch
|
|
Congratulations to Kings Junior High School on being re-designated as and Ohio School to Watch!
The Ohio Department of Education's Ohio Schools to Watch (OSTW) program recognizes exemplary middle schools who are growth-oriented and constantly "on the move" toward higher achievement of all students. The initiative launched by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform, identifies schools across the U.S. that are well on their way to meeting the criteria for high-performing middle level schools which include academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structures and processes.
KJH was initially designated in 2012 under the leadership of then Principal, Timothy J. Spinner. As a designated OSTW building, the school must apply for re-designation every three years. KJH has now been re-designated twice under the leadership of Principal, Nicole Huelsman! To qualify for the distinction, the building staff must meet criteria set by the ODE's OSTW committee. The committee is focused on improvements based on the previous site visit. They are also interested in any new programs/initiatives, changes, and/or approaches that have been implemented since being designated.
The OSTW Committee that visited KJH was impressed with the interventions and programs that have been put in place since they last visited. One committee member said, "We loved the caring environment you all create for the students. The collaborative-driven mindset is evident in helping your students receive the best education and relationship-building possible!"
KJH Principal, Nicole Huelsman gave kudos to her staff. She said, "I'm proud of the KJH Staff for how well they support our students every day. This designation is a great reflection of our staff and how focused they are in meeting all of the needs for all of our students."
KJH is only one of eighteen schools in the state who have been recognized as an Ohio School to Watch!

KJH Students Visit Kings Island
|
|
The Kings Local School District enjoys a great partnership with our neighbors to the south, Kings Island.
This week, Kings Junior High School students enrolled in Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a class that explores pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, received a special "back of the park" tour of Kings Island.
Over 100 students explored real world engineering while meeting with KI’s engineering and construction teams. PTLW teacher, Sara Nicholls told us that most of the tour was so top secret that pics were not allowed!
The KI Engineers discussed the different career fields used at KI. One field that really applied to the KJH students was geotechnical engineering due to the glacier till and topography of the land. The students also learned about the engineer design process for the demolition of the roller coaster, Son of A Beast. Additionally, they learned the criteria and constraints of a given budget with area square footage, and coding systems for lighting.
Nicholls said, "The students learned how technology has changed roller coaster design by allowing computer aided parabolas and radial angles that used to take hours to calculate by hand.
Kings Island’s engineering team was very excited to partner with Kings and WCCC to show how they relate, create & innovate right here locally!"

KHS Choirs Perform Works of Local Composer
|
|
On Thursday, March 14, something very special happened during the Kings High School Choir concert entitled, A Celebration of Living Composers.
Three of the KHS Choirs sang pieces that were composed by a local composer. That composer just happens to be Kings Mills Elementary Music Teacher, Matt Jenkins!
The first of his three original pieces of music
titled
A Most Jubilant Song
with text drawn from Walt Whitman's poem,
A Song of Joys,
was performed by All the Kings Men Choir.
The piece he composed for the Women's Choir is titled
Stars
and is based on an old Texas folk song called
Bye 'M Bye
and the African-American spiritual
My Lord, What a Morning,
with additional text from a poem called
The Old Astronomer
by Sarah Williams.
Lastly, the Chamber Choir's piece is based on the song,
O Music
by Lowell Mason, who is considered to be the father figure of music education in the United States. Additionally, there is some text from Walt Whitman's poem,
That Music Always Round Me
and a few lines of text that Mr. Jenkins created.
Music Colleague, Hope Milthaler said it was a great experience for the choir students to work with a composer in a lab setting, many of those who had Mr. Jenkins in elementary music. She said, "
But the best part, which I didn’t anticipate, was how magical it would be to experience the “birth” of three world premieres in the moment. What an honor to present them to the world! While we could never sufficiently pay Mr. Jenkins for three brand new commissions, we are committing to stand beside him throughout the publication process for all three compositions because they absolutely should be in print and available to choirs around the world!"
In other news, Mr. Jenkins will be traveling to New York City from May 22-25 to perform at Carnegie Hall! He will be singing with the
Young Professionals Choral Collective (YPCC) and joining in a choir of over 100 voices from all over the United States to sing at the famous venue. Congratulations, Mr. Jenkins!

The Cody Mayo Foundation's 3rd Annual Golf Scramble will take place on Saturday, June 8 at the Grizzly Golf Course.
This golf outing directly supports Kings. The Cody Mayo Foundation has partnered with the Kings Local School District to help send Kings Junior High students on the annual Washington, D.C. trip. Last year, they donated $5,000 that provided scholarships to several students who were unable to afford the trip. This year, the goal is to raise $10,000 and expand by partnering with neighboring districts.
