Southern Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network continues to grow!
AgriSafe Network and the partners across the Southern US region, collectively known as the Southern Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network, has been busy. In addition to specific mental health and stress assistance grant projects on behalf of hardworking Southern farmers and ranchers, the Network has grown to 25 partners. This growth brings a wealth of expanded agricultural and mental health experts and increased representation to 13 Southern states, including the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Of significance, the Network has grown in its ability to address and provide resources to socially disadvantaged agricultural producers. Partners meet monthly to collaborate and innovate mental health programming. Some notable projects include rural relevant Mental Health First Aid and QPR training (suicide intervention) and efforts to expand and deliver farm mediation services. As the Network has grown, partners see outside interest growing through speaking engagement, webinar, and podcast invitations.
If you are looking to learn more about the Southern Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network, contact Tara Haskins, DNP, RN, AgriSafe's Total Farmer Health Director thaskins@agrisafe.org.

Family Communication in Uncertain Times
On top of COVID-19 issues, ranching and farming communities are experiencing high heat and dry conditions in several states, wet weather at the wrong time in other states, and disastrous high wind damage in the Midwest. Any one of these conditions alone can cause high stress levels, constant worry and sleeplessness. There is no doubt that right now we are facing a public health crisis in our rural communities! During tough times communication is essential, especially with children who will sense that something may be wrong but don’t really know what or how to ask. Kids can and will carry the same range of emotional responses as adults. No matter how dire, troublesome, or serious the situations are, our children and young adults need to know that they are loved and their day to day issues are important. If internet communication is available, virtual gatherings with family members away from home can help everyone stay in touch and informed.
