“You should glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, life, and resurrection, through whom we are saved and delivered.”
—Galatians 6:14—
Dear Friends in Christ,
The above scripture is also the Entrance Antiphon for the Mass for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which we will chant at our feast day celebration at Holy Cross Parish this weekend. It tells us something important: The cross of Christ is not just an instrument of suffering and death, but the very means to our life and resurrection with Jesus, who was victorious over it all! That’s why the theme of resurrection and new life is implicit in the feast that honors Christ’s cross.
Monastic brothers and sisters have lived this spirituality of the cross for centuries. Many Carmelites and other contemplatives live in simple cells adorned with nothing other than a simple cross. Not a crucifix with the corpus of Christ, but an unadorned cross. The purpose of that is so that as the monk or nun arises from sleep, they embrace the cross as their own each day and literally pick it up to carry it in daily prayer and work to closely imitate the life, suffering, death, AND resurrection of Christ. Their whole lives encompass a life of the cross. My Carmelite friend, Sr. Maureen of Merciful Love, OCD, who just passed away from a brain tumor, had such a cross in her cell at the Shoreline monastery. In keeping with Carmelite tradition, she pinned a scripture verse to the bottom of it, which read: “The mercies of the Lord I will sing forever.” Psalm 89:2. She said her call was to embrace and carry Jesus’ cross in her own life each day and to sing of His mercies to all she met and in all she did! I can attest that she did so until she breathed her last.
Friends, we are all called to embrace the cross or crosses given to us in this life. If we lean on Jesus, He carries them with us and bears much of their weight as we go along. Ask for the grace to lean on Him more. It will make the road of life a quicker one to the glory of resurrection. And along the way, let us give thanks for our parish of Holy Cross and the good people who make up that parish family of North Tacoma!
Blessings,
Fr. David Mulholland

The parking lot stripes were recently repainted. It's one of those things where you say to yourself, "something looks different," but you aren't sure what. Ongoing maintenance is important. It certainly makes it easier to park!

Statement on COVID-19
By the instruction of the Holy See and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, using all current COVID-19 vaccines during this pandemic is morally acceptable. It is crucial for one's health, but it is also our responsibility to care for the common good of the broader community, and getting a vaccine is one way to do so. Everyone age 5+ is eligible to receive the vaccine. Do so knowing that it is morally acceptable. Masks are optional as of March 12, 2022. A limited section for physically distanced seating is available.
Obligation to Attend Mass
The obligation to attend Mass does not bind in impossible or gravely difficult situations. If you are ill or immunocompromised, stay home and join us on the live stream from St. Patrick Catholic Church on our parish YouTube Channel.
