News & Insights
Greetings!

With summer coming to a close and some colleges and universities already in full swing, we hope you are looking forward to the fall semester. While the impact of COVID-19 will continue to linger, most students, faculty and staff should enjoy a year that feels a lot like the pre-pandemic era.

We have some exciting announcements in this newsletter, including our recent collaboration with Jenzabar and our new, 30-minute complimentary session for schools looking to introduce new academic programs. Get more information about each in the sections below.

As you progress through the fall term, please feel free to contact us if you find your institution is facing challenges or needs help due to additional demand. We have the experience to seamlessly integrate with your staff and take on any type of financial aid work or special projects. We also offer full financial aid support and outsourcing.

FA Office Planning for New Academic Program Offerings - Complimentary 30-Minute Session

Administrators need to be on the same page when new academic programs are introduced. The financial aid administrator can wind up on the hot seat if students were told they could receive federal loans or other financial aid when the program is not eligible.

Meet with our team of experts to get answers to all of your questions and ensure you take all of the necessary steps to determine eligibility and, if appropriate, process financial aid for new programs.
Master the Art of Negotiation

We don’t always think of it as such, but most of our interactions with students or their parents are in fact a negotiation, whether it be an appeal for more financial aid, the waiver of a late payment fee or re-grading of an exam. One party is asking the other to do something they are not naturally inclined to do – thus a negotiation must ensue. As employees of the institution, we do have the upper hand since we never have to do what is being asked, but what is the cost of that? A complaint to the president’s office? The same student returning to your office over and over trying to get a different answer? Loss of the student to another institution all together? Wouldn’t it be better if you could be partners working to solve a shared problem rather than adversaries with only one winner?

Help Your Alumni Navigate Federal Student Loan Repayment
Imagine what it would be like to suddenly get a bill for hundreds of dollars – and not just one time, but every month for the next ten years! This would be a challenge for anyone, even those of us with superior budgeting skills. But this is what millions of student loan borrowers will face in the very near future as the federal student loan payment pause is scheduled to expire on August 31. Industry experts expect another extension until the end of the year, but as of today, the Department of Education is standing firm with a September 1, 2022 repayment start date.
Consultant Spotlight
What do you enjoy most about your current role with HEAG?

I enjoy helping schools analyze problems and make improvements. Consulting allows me to be more creative and provide a broader array of solutions; some of my former in-house roles could get a bit repetitive.

What was your first job?

I worked as a bus boy and dishwasher at a local tavern in my hometown.

What makes HEAG unique or special compared to your work experiences elsewhere?

For me, it’s the trust that came with my role as a consultant. No one questions my capabilities; I am able to do what I do best with little to no supervision.

What is something few people know about you?

I completed my second Spartan race and I'm training for my third Spartan race this November in Indiana. It’s a 10K with 25 obstacles.
Chad Wick
How long have you been with HEAG?

I joined HEAG in July 2021.

Tell us a little about yourself.

As far as my career, I started working in financial aid about 20 years ago. During that time, I developed policies and procedures to improve student satisfaction, information accuracy and timely processing. I later transitioned to Campus Operations and the Student Services side of higher education and held roles including Director of Campus Operations, Director of Education and Campus Director. After that, I transitioned to providing financial aid consulting services to colleges and universities.

On the personal side, I am married and have four children who are very active in softball, lacrosse and cheerleading. Much of my free time is spent getting them to practice and watching them compete.

What are some of the FA tasks you have performed and excelled at?

I excel at solving problems – whether it’s streamlining an operational issue, developing policies and procedures to improve student satisfaction, turning around underperforming financial aid offices, or fixing problems with relationships within an institution.

What advice would you give to a school looking to bring in an FA consultant?

If a school brings in a consultant to assess their current situation and determine their needs, they should make sure the consultant makes recommendations to resolve any issues that are uncovered. Too many times, I have seen consultants come in and outline existing problems, but they don’t offer any solutions to resolve them.

When you aren't consulting what other hobbies and interests do you have?

I enjoy skiing in the winter, working out and training for Spartan races, and spending time with my family.
