Adapting Spaces. Changing Lives.

One Home at a Time.

It's Time to Celebrate!

Happy Holidays!

Hello Kristine,

The year 2023 has been a big one for BAHC. We purchased our 51st home and celebrated our 20th anniversary!

BAHC owns and manages specialized homes for residents with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) served by three Regional Centers across five counties in the Bay Area. Many of these individuals have medical, behavioral, and mental health needs that require constant support. We lease our homes to service providers who provide phenomenal 24/7 support to these residents. We are proud of the quality of our homes and the excellent property management services we provide for the clients and the service providers.

BAHC began in 2004, and I am proud to be its founding Executive Director. We have a fantastic staff and a very supportive and committed Board of Directors. Our partnerships with the Regional Centers are one of our keys to success; we work as a team to create quality homes for our unique residents. So many people help us do what we do, and we thank you all. Our funders, contractors, volunteers, families, donors, and, most importantly, our residents inspire us to do what we do every day.

Thanks for being a friend and supporter of BAHC. It has been a great year, and we look forward to 2024 and serving our community. I'm so happy to share a few of my favorite memories of 2023 in this newsletter.

If you would like to make an end-of-year donation to the Una Casa Mas Fund, your support will be greatly appreciated.

You really do make a difference!

BAHC's mission is to be a catalyst for improving the lives of people with I/DD by creating and maintaining quality housing opportunities that meet the needs of the individual and the community. We created the Una Casa Mas Fund to support all BAHC programs. We appreciate your support!

MEMORY HOME

BAHC and many families have advocated for a memory home funded by SARC/DDS in the Bay area for over six years. This came to fruition in 2023. This type of home will serve people with I/DD (Down's Syndrome) and Dementia/Alzheimer's in a single-family home integrated into the community with full support (24/7). BAHC then responded to the RFP issued from SARC to develop this memory home, and we were awarded the grant/contract in Spring/2023.

In November, BAHC closed on a four-bedroom home in Gilroy after looking at over 40 homes in this tight real estate market. BAHC is remodeling the home and will be operational in 2024.

There has been much appreciation from families who have children with I/DD and memory issues for BAHC's work on behalf of this population. We hope there will be additional memory homes in the community and BAHC will continue advocating for them.

LEGACY HOMES PROGRAM

In early 2023, BAHC worked with the Harvard Business School Consulting Group for input and guidance to our Legacy program. Thanks to the generosity of a donor, BAHC was then able to hire Raymond Magpantay from the Harvard Business Group team to help us develop a strategic and implementation plan for Legacy. We just wrapped up our 9-month contract with Raymond and are ready to implement it in 2024. We are thrilled with what our staff and Raymond have created to serve our community.

The Legacy Homes Program allows family members to transfer a home to BAHC to enable adapted housing, property management and maintenance, and coordinated services for a family member with an I/DD. The primary resident will have a home where their needs are the guiding principle.

BAHC also hired Madison Adams as our new Program Manager for the Legacy Homes and the Making Homes Work Programs. We are thrilled to have Maddie join the BAHC team.

MAKING HOMES WORK PROGRAM (MHW)

We expanded our MHW program to reach more individuals with I/DD in the community who need help making their homes work. We were so touched to help John and Laura, a married couple living in San Jose who needed help making their apartment work. Both John and Laura have cerebral palsy and use power chairs. Their flooring and walls needed repair. Utilizing funds raised from the community through our Una Casa Mas Fund, BAHC provided the resources to complete the transformation to their home.

At our recent 2023 Bocce Showdown, held as a fundraiser for our Una Casa Mas Fund, John and Laura shared their story with over 100 guests and expressed their deep appreciation for what BAHC has done for their lives. Everyone was in happy tears. This is why BAHC does what it does: making a difference in people's lives.

2023 BAHC BOCCE SHOWDOWN

In October, thanks to Board Chair Jon Gundersen and Event Coordinator Carrie Benjamin, we held our third annual bocce event at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos. We raised over $75k for our Una Casa Mas Fund.

Seeing over 100 people come together to raise funds, play bocce, eat, drink, be merry, dance to the Dream Achievers, and bid on fabulous auction items was so much fun.

$250K MATCHING GRANT FROM SANTA CLARA COUNTY

Thanks to Supervisor Joe Simitian's support, we received a $250K matching grant over two years from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to support our Making Homes Work program in Santa Clara County.

We received $125K from Santa Clara County in 2023, and BAHC raised over $127K from our annual Bocce event and grants to meet that matching grant requirement. Next year, we will expand our MHW program by working with more people with I/DD who need assistance making home modifications.

We will also raise community funds to meet the matching grant requirement for that additional $125K (2024) from Santa Clara County.
