Weekly eNews - Corrected

June 13, 2025

This is a repeat of the eNews sent earlier today, with two corrections:

  1. The funeral for Gayle Scott is on June 24 (a Tuesday, not a Monday as previously listed).
  2. The correct location for Hearing the Gospel is the Cloister on June 18 (not the Parish Hall this week).

St. Andrew’s Summer of Sabbath and Solidarity

This summer, you are invited to prioritize the rhythm of loving God and neighbor that sustains us. Keeping the sabbath is part of the fabric of creation and one of God’s Ten Commandments. Sabbath provides us intentional time and space to breathe deeply, to return to God, and to be renewed. Whether sabbath for you means spending time with friends and family, basking in God’s creation, or simply slowing down to savor the joys of summer, carve out time to reconnect with God in the months ahead. As author Tricia Hershey puts it, rest is also resistance—to a world that is always demanding that we do and buy and become more. Sabbath reminds us that we are created in God’s image and that we are enough.

When our spiritual cup is full, we are better able to serve others, to speak out and show up. There will be a variety of ways to show solidarity for our neighbors this summer through efforts to support Abundant Life and the food pantry, call leaders about legislative priorities, wash the feet of refugees and immigrants, or tutor children who need extra educational support. We have gifts of healing and hope and a commitment to justice that are needed in this hurting world.

We hold together the inner journey of faith and the outer journey of discipleship. Look for possibilities for sabbath and solidarity in future eNews editions. We will break bread together after church in August and share our summer experiences.

A Little Jesus Goes a Long Way!

On Pentecost, we gave everyone a little Jesus to carry as a reminder of God’s love that goes with us wherever we go. We are all called to share Jesus, and a little Jesus goes a long way. If you did not get one, know that we always have more Jesus to give (and you can pick one up in the church office). This summer, all are invited to take pictures of yourselves and Jesus and send them to Susan Frye at the link below. We will be sharing the pictures and stories online and in the parish hall.

Bishops Renew Call for Ceasefire in Gaza

Last Friday, Bishop Sam Rodman and Bishop Jennifer Brooke-Davidson renewed their call for a ceasefire in Gaza. An excerpt of their statement appears below, with the full text linked at the end of this block.

"Saint Paul tells us that 'our citizenship is in heaven.' (Philippians 3:20) Our churches, then, are outposts of the Kingdom of Heaven, also called the beloved community. As disciples of Jesus, the values of this kingdom rule our hearts and minds before any earthly allegiances. Our communities vow, at every baptism and every confirmation, to proclaim, to champion and to embody the kingdom values of the dignity of every human being—EVERY HUMAN BEING—because each of us is created in image of God.

"We renew our call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, effective immediately."

We Pray For

Anglican Cycle of Prayer: La Iglesia Anglicana de Mexico

The Old Christ Church, on the western edge of the city center of Mexico City, was the first Anglican cathedral in Mexico, built between 1893 and 1895. After a new cathedral was built in 1970, the old church briefly housed a small museum documenting the British presence in Mexico. Paid for by the U.S. embassy, it was known as the British-American Museum. The church building was irreparably damaged by the 1985 earthquakes. From Antiguo Christ Church, Articulo 123, Centro Histórico | Mexico City (cdmx.gob.mx)

The Roman Catholic Church was Mexico’s official religion until its war for independence (1810-21). With greater religious freedom, in 1860 some Christians formed the Church of Jesus. Wanting to secure apostolic succession, they persuaded our Episcopal Church to help that along by our consecrating their first bishop. But, for complicated reasons, our General Convention in 1904 created a Missionary District of Mexico, which duplicated the Church of Jesus’ synod. Left with that challenge, the Mexicans’ Church of Jesus asked to become part of the new district. No sooner had this happened than the Revolution of 1917 restricted churches. These restrictions continued until mid-century. Finally, in 1995 la Iglesia Anglicana de Mexico became a province in the Communion. In 2024, disputes over elections to the episcopacy created tensions. Bishop Jo Bailey-Wells, now deputy secretary general of the Anglican Communion but previously heading Duke Divinity School’s Anglican Episcopal House of Studies, has been instrumental in seeking to resolve the matter.
