Our Book Study on A Voice in the Wilderness Continues
Sept. 29 after Worship (Cloister)
In 2022, The Next Big Idea Club listed A Voice in the Wilderness: A Pioneering Biologist Explains How Evolution Can Help Us Solve Our Biggest Problems (Basic Books) by Joseph L. Graves, Jr., as one of its 26 best science books of the year. In May 2023, Christianity Today published a scathing review of the book written by the anti-science Discovery Institute. And a month later, the scholarly journal Black Theology hailed it for its “prophetic voice.” A Voice in the Wilderness is an exploration of the scientific career of Dr. Joseph L. Graves, Jr., who is a St. Andrew’s parishioner. Join us this Sunday after worship in the Cloister for the final session of our three-week study on the book’s main themes.

Living Compass Class for Parents
Sundays through Oct. 27
Right after Worship (Library)
Grounded in Scripture, the tradition of the Church, and the sharing our own stories, this course is designed to support participants as they seek to live the abundant life God intends for them. We often say that you have to put on your own life vest before you can help another, but it is easy to lose sight of our own well-being when we are actively parenting. The Living Compass is a model that invites us to attend to our mind, heart, strength, and soul. In a small group setting, we’ll create a space of rest, contemplation, deep conversation, and compassion, while learning to better care for ourselves as we care for our kids. The class runs concurrently with our Confirmation for Youth course, and childcare will be available. We will also be using this Living Compass model for our senior high EYC in the spring. Facilitated by Anna Taylor and Rev. Ginny Inman.

Join Us for Celebration of Creation Sunday!
On October 6 we celebrate Creation Sunday in our 10 a.m. worship with special liturgy and music. After worship, all are invited to the Parish Hall for coffee and our first Community Conversation of the program year. Phelps Sprinkle, CEO of Peacehaven Community Farm, will share about the farm’s history and current phase of growth. “Let’s Be Different Together” is Peacehaven’s motto, and their vision is one of abundant resources for learning, growth, and connectivity: “This abundance is for people of all abilities. We do not own it and are called to give it away.”
At 3 p.m., you're invited to return with your well-behaved pets for our annual Blessing of the Animals. We will gather on the front lawn to share God’s love with the creatures who love us through life’s ups and downs. Attire for pets: leash or carrier.

Affordable Housing Advocates Needed
Affordable housing is growing in Greensboro! We have an active meeting schedule for housing in Guilford County and Greensboro. St. Andrew’s has been involved in advocating for livable, viable, and affordable housing for families with children, houseless people, and senior citizens. We are looking for those of you who are passionate about helping with this cause and who can meet bi-monthly on Tuesday afternoons as we follow up on what is shared in the various housing meetings. If you are interested in this work, please see Deacon Pam or Virginia Haskett for more details.

Help Feed Our Growing Youth Community!
Our EYC is growling—oh wait, that's just their stomachs! But St. Andrew's youth community is also growing, and we need the help of our parish family to feed them! One of the best parts of our regular Sunday evening meetings is having the chance for youth and advisors to sit down and share a meal. It gives us all a chance to slow down, connect, and have great conversations and build new friendships at the end of busy meetings full of service, learning, team building, and more. We have five Sunday dinners between now and December that haven't been planned yet, and we would love your help. If you are interested in sponsoring or preparing a meal for the EYC, please reach out to Martha Chaires for more information.

Anglican Cycle of Prayer: The Church of Pakistan (United)
The Most Rev. Dr. Azad Marshall, Moderator and President Bishop of the Church of Pakistan (United), and a delegation of church and community leaders met with the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in March 2024. In partnership with the Implementation Minority Rights Forum, they sought to underscore their commitment to fostering inclusivity, understanding, and respect for religious diversity within Pakistani society. Pictured here, they are presenting to the Supreme Court registrar a copy of the King James Version of the Bible, dating back to 1611.

Tradition has it that the Apostle Thomas introduced Christianity to the Indian sub-continent, which consisted of what is now (since partition in 1947) both India and Pakistan. Evangelization among Muslims—the dominant population of Pakistan—has never been very successful globally, and most Christians in Pakistan came not from among Muslims but from the Dalit (the historic lower caste among Hindus) in the Punjab region. Today Christians are just a tiny percentage of the population. A united church, instead of multiple denominations, made good sense under the circumstances, and in 1970 the Church of Pakistan became the fourth of the united churches in full communion with the Anglican Communion (the others being South India, North India, and Bangladesh). The Church of Pakistan merged Anglicans, Methodists, Lutherans, and Scottish Presbyterians. Pakistan became an Islamic Republic in 1956, and recent decades have revealed increasing attacks upon Christians and destruction of churches.
