Lenten Resources for Reflection and Prayer

Living Well Through Lent 2025: Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit

in Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind, from Living Compass

Available as a booklet at church and at https://www.livingcompass.org/lent

The Living Compass Model for Well-Being offers us guidance in four dimensions of our being: heart, soul, strength, and mind. Just like a mobile or kinesthetic art, these dimensions are interconnected— movement in one area affects all the others. The invitation is to live an undivided life, where heart, soul, strength, and mind are integrated into both our being and our doing.

The Hardest Part, from Kate Bowler

Available at https://katebowler.com/seasonal_devotional/the-hardest-part/

This is the season that asks us to stop pretending we’re holding it all together. It’s a time to pause, sit with what’s fragile and unfinished, and let God meet us in the hardest parts of our lives. These Lenten guides are designed to be a companion through the season as you pause, reflect, and find the courage to stay with the hard part, trusting that the good part is still coming.

Lenten Meditations, from Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD)

Available at https://www.episcopalrelief.org/church-in-action/lent/

Join writer Jerusalem Jackson Greer this Lent as she encourages us to partake in “A Commonplace Lent.” “Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Living Hope—Lenten Reflections from the Church of England

Available 3 ways: as a booklet in our Parish Hall and church entrances; as Reflection Emails here; and via the Church of England’s daily devotional app, Everyday Faith here.

This Lent we are encouraged to put down deep roots of hope by connecting with God who is with us at all times. In the disappointment of daily setbacks and the pain of deeper hurts, we discover that God is present with us. And God promises a future where all things are healed and made new. Living Hope offers us the opportunity to deepen our hope in God and be part of what God is doing to bring hope in the world.

This Sunday

Living Hope: Sustaining Our Faith in Difficult Times

Adult Formation Offering for Lent,

Right after Worship (Cloister)

Join your fellow parishioners during Lent for an exploration of how we understand our faith and how it sustains us through the ups and downs of our lives. Through discussion based on a video from Kate Bowler, we will examine the messages and teachings we’ve relied on, both in persevering through the difficult times that happen to us all, and in using our gifts to extend God’s kingdom and God’s love to one another. We hope to uncover new understandings, new connections, and new insights into how we are called to “be the light.” We meet in the Cloister, right after 10 a.m. worship. Facilitated by Mark Courtright and Marcia Moore.

Children's Chapel for Lent is This Sunday

March 9, during Worship

This Sunday we'll enter the mystery of Lent with Children's Chapel with Mr. Sam. We will process out of the church as usual, but instead of heading to our classrooms on the yellow hall, we'll get to spend time in our sweet Children's Chapel with a special story, music, movement, communion, and a heart offering.

EYC, Let’s Lean in on Lent

March 9, 5-6:30

This week, our middle and high schoolers will be kicking off Lent with a prayer station scavenger hunt scattered all around the church. We’ll wrap up with a yummy Mario’s pizza and salad dinner, courtesy of Laura Shinn, in Herman Hall. See you Sunday at 5!

Last Call for Lenten Small Groups!

Sign Up by March 9

Offerings Begin the Week of March 10

The purpose of an intentional small group is to build trusting relationships with God and one another. Lenten small groups are a way to deepen our faith. When we meet for conversation, practice, study, and prayer, we learn how to love and are strengthened in hope. These groups will meet for 5–6 weeks for one hour in the Library. Each group will use a provided Lenten booklet to foster reflection and discussion. Groups are limited to 10 participants, and some groups are full. The following groups still have openings as of March 7:

  • Mondays at 6 p.m., facilitated by Cheri Courtright
  • Thursdays at 7:30 a.m., Men’s Group facilitated by Stephen Inman and Craig Taylor.

Check openings and sign up at the link below, by March 9.

St. Agatha & St. Mary Chapter Program

Monday, March 10, 2 p.m. (Parish Hall)

“Jesus, the Biblical Prophets, and American Foreign Aid,” with the Rev. Dr. Leon Spencer

How are people of faith called to respond to human need, wherever in the world such need exists? How do governments and societies beyond the faith communities fit in? Leon Spencer will reflect on the ways the biblical tradition connects (or doesn’t) to foreign aid, from the Marshall Plan and President Kennedy’s creation of USAID onward to today. We hope you will make plans to attend and learn with us on March 10. Please contact Janice Cox Pollard with questions.

St. Anne Chapter Meeting

Wednesday, March 12, 10:30 a.m. (Library)

Please plan to join us for our morning ECW gathering this Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., in the Library. Contact Sandy O'Briant with questions.

Serving Others by Cooking for Abundant Life’s Community Dinner

Tuesday, March 11

Lent is a great time to do a little extra cooking for others who have come to rely on the weekly community dinners at Abundant Life. St. Andrew’s provides hearty entrees and veggie sides every second Tuesday of the month. Our next chance to cook is this Tuesday, March 11. To help, please sign up using the link below, and prepare an entree for 8 or veggie side for 6. Please use disposable pans and cover the dishes in aluminum foil, marked with what you have made. Feel free to cook early and leave dishes to the church freezer, or you may drop off Tuesday afternoon at the address on the online sign-up sheet. (Note: At church, please use the Pantry fridge, not the Kitchen fridge. The Pantry fridge is located in the labeled "Butler’s Closet" on the yellow classroom hallway diagonally across from the Library). In helping with this meal, know that you have served God through your service to others. Barbara Cooke will be happy to answer your questions about any part of this process and may be reached at 336-521-0040 or by email at the link below.

March 16, M'Coul's Public House

Please join us for our March Sprouts Brunch next Sunday, March 16. That just happens to be St. Patrick’s Day Eve, so obviously we’re headed downtown to M’Coul’s Public House! M’Coul’s (110 W McGee St.) is Greensboro’s staple Irish Pub with American roots, and trust us when we say that the potato cake (stuffed with cheese and onions) is the exact amount of Sunday comfort and joy that you need to send you into the next work week. Wear a little green and come ready for a carb fest! Contact Martha-Wade Chaires with questions at the link below.

Support the Altar Guild with Easter Flower Dedications

Submit by Thursday, April 10

We Pray For

Anglican Cycle of Prayer: The Anglican Church of Canada

Archbishop Chris Harper, national Indigenous archbishop of the Anglican Church of Canada, recently reflected on the symbolism of feather and sage as markers for change and transition. See his reflection at Praying for the humility to change, and accept change - Anglican Journal

The first Anglican Eucharist in what is now Canada took place aboard ship on an Arctic expedition in 1578, the first resident priest arrived in Newfoundland in 1612, and the Hudson Bay Company’s first chaplain began work in 1683. But the Anglican Church in Canada only expanded “as a church” in the 18th and 19th centuries – helped along by an influx of loyalists to the Crown who fled to Canada during our War of Independence. By the time of the Confederation in 1867, any claims by the Church of England to be an “established church” ended in Canada. In 1955, the church’s name changed from the Church of England in the Dominion of Canada to the Anglican Church of Canada. It has faced challenges in recent decades, not just over their “residential schools” for the First Nations, but also over general decline in numbers and resources.
