Holiday Cards and Bookmarks
Get in the festive spirit of the season and use your creativity to make holiday greeting cards and bookmarks for senior citizens. This artsy event is open to all ages, but students who need community service hours are especially welcome. All materials will be provided. Meet on the Library's back patio at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 11. Your gifts will be delivered to local nursing homes in the following weeks.
Book Flight Book Club
Book Flight's book club selection for the December 14 Zoom discussion is Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. Alaska in 1920 is a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. During their childless marriage, they build a snow child and the Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel continues from there. Book Flight's book for January 11 will be The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. Call us at (831) 646-3933 or refdesk@monterey.org for more details.
The Life and Art of Jo Mora
Join us for a lively discussion each month with local historian Tim Thomas as we explore Monterey’s rich historic past. On Thursday, December 16 at 4:00 pm on Zoom, we will be discussing the life and art of Jo Mora, with special guest Peter Hiller, Collection Curator for the Jo Mora Trust and author of The Life and Times of Jo Mora. Joseph Jacinto Mora was born in Uruguay in 1876, and lived in the Carmel area in the 1920s and '30s. Many pieces of his art, sculpture and murals can be found in the Monterey and San Francisco Bay areas. Register now for this interesting talk with Tim Thomas and Peter Hiller.
Holiday Scattergories
Scattergories is a fun group game where players have to think quickly on their feet by saying the first word, phrase or category that comes to mind, given the topic. Why not try a holiday theme version, online with other library patrons? Sign up here for the game on Friday, December 17 at 4:00 pm, then have fun with seasonal lists such as "Gifts you don't want for Christmas" or "Favorite holiday foods."
Monterey and Pacific Grove Public Libraries are accepting donations of unopened, non-perishable food through December 31 as an option for payment of overdue fines.  Food donations cannot be accepted for lost or damaged library materials.  All food donations will be given to local food banks which are in particularly dire need this year.  The food banks ask that food that is expired or in glass jars not be donated.
CAreer Pathways
As part of the American Rescue Plan to aid in recovery from the pandemic, the California State Library is making a wide range of free classes available through your public library. Many of the online classes help with job skills. Three “CAreer” resources now available on MPL's website include Northstar, training classes to build your digital literacy skills; GetSetUp, a collection of lifestyle and social classes for lifelong learners over age 50; and Coursera, technology and business skills classes for adults. Log in with your Monterey Public Library card to get a taste of hundreds of free classes to enhance your life, career, job search, or entertainment! Call us at (831) 646-3933 for help.
