Hyperion annual meeting: strength, security
|
|
"We achieved exceptional loan growth which increased by 34% year over year," he says of Q1 2023 figures. "Our deposit growth was even stronger, increasing by 46% since the first quarter of 2022. These and other factors all contributed to our revenues increasing by 59% compared to the same period a year ago."
The meeting also saw the re-election of eight board members; reelected to serve another year are Crawford; Lou DeCesare, Hyperion President & COO; Jill Jinks, Chief Executive Officer of Insurance House Holdings, Inc.; Jim McAlpin, Jr., Partner, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, LLP; Robert N.C. Nix, III, Founder and President, Pleasant News, Inc.; Michael Purcell, retired Audit Partner, Deloitte & Touché; Lara Rhame, Chief U.S. Economist, FS Investments; and Gretchen Santamour, a Partner in Philadelphia law firm Stradley Ronon.
“We were fortunate to be the new bank for at least one new customer whose banking relationship elsewhere was in flux due to the turmoil in the industry in the first quarter,” DeCesare says. “We also were able to assist at least a couple of existing depositors who shifted additional accounts to us due to the turmoil, taking advantage of a program that covers account balances beyond the usual $250,000 FDIC limit. “Notably, while the Depositors Insurance Fund, as it is called, has been on offer for some time now, we have not had customers take us up on that offering until now."
In addition to adding new customers and otherwise growing during the past year, DeCesare notes Hyperion added five new team members, including a highly experienced U.S. Small Business Administration lender, Susan Battle, who is expected to grow the bank's SBA program significantly.
“We continue to demonstrate the security that comes with smaller banks like ours; these new customers in particular affirm this,” DeCesare says.

Experienced IT exec keeps us tech-centric
|
|
The bank recently named William C. (Bill) Young Vice President & Director of Technology Services, a new position created for and by him. Bill is an IT leader with 25+ years of experience.
“Bill is an articulate communicator with an innate ability to interpret and understand IT terminology as well as ensuring non-technical translation for others,” says Hyperion’s Lou DeCesare. “Plus, his demonstrated background in researching, recommending, and promoting new technologies and best practices to streamline major IT processes and improve overall end-user experience, coupled with his extensive fintech background, makes him a great fit for Team Hyperion.”
Outside of work, as an FAA-Licensed UAV (Drone) Pilot, Bill volunteers his time with a local Search & Rescue Team based in Phoenixville (see drone pilot Bill pictured in action above). He also holds certifications as an NRA certified Rifle & Pistol instructor and finds joy in photography, frequently capturing his daughter's pole-vaulting and softball teams.
“Being part of this dynamic and expanding community bank during such a crucial period for Hyperion, the industry and our valued customers and business partners fills me with excitement,” Bill says. “I eagerly anticipate advancements in technology, security and numerous other solutions.”
He cherishes family life with his wife, two daughters, and two beloved dogs, Oso and Gunner. The family enjoys summers at the beach in Wildwood Crest, NJ.

Lauren Flowers: 10 years with Hyperion
|
|
Her colleagues recently celebrated Lauren Flowers’ 10th anniversary with Hyperion Bank; a significant milestone for a 16-year old organization.
Lauren (SVP, Human Resources, Corporate Secretary) started at Hyperion in 2013 as a mortgage loan processor. She wanted to learn more about banking and asked then-new Hyperion President Lou DeCesare for more responsibility: As time went by, Lauren came to handle HR, Vendor Management and be Corporate Secretary. She has since handed off Vendor Management to Bill Young, though Loan Operations now reports to Lauren. Not bad for her first job in banking!
“I have been so fortunate to have so many great colleagues to work with along the way that have helped me grow as an employee and taught me more about banking (among them, she mentions Charlie, Paul, Frank, George, Danielle Selway, Elisa, Chris Mumma and Lee) and especially fortunate to have Lou as a mentor,” Lauren says. “In the past few years, with the addition of Atlanta and growing our team as a whole, I know there are so many more things I can learn from my knowledgeable colleagues, and I look forward to what I can accomplish in the next 10 years.”
Congratulations on this impressive milestone – Happy Anniversary, Lauren!

Juneteenth
Monday, June 19
Look for Juneteenth activities in Atlanta, Philadelphia & elsewhere and remember it is now a Federal holiday, which also means Hyperion Bank is closed Mon., June 19. “Juneteenth” – a portmanteau (a word created when two words are smashed together: “June” & “nineteenth”) – is thought to be the oldest commemoration of the end of slavery in the U.S. It was June 19, 1865, when the Union Army finally brought news of emancipation to Texas, the furthest confederate state. A national expression of African American culture and freedom, it is celebrated informally and officially, from family gatherings to parades and also goes by the name “Freedom Day.”

LGBT Pride Month
June 2023
June is LGBT Pride Month, established after the Stonewall riots of June 1969, which proved to be a watershed moment for the gay community. Activities during the month largely center around recognizing LGBT equal rights and celebrating that culture. Many Pride parades traditionally take place in June, though some municipalities – like Atlanta – have moved Pride festivals to the Fall when weather is gentler & more predictable. A guide to Atlanta Pride & Philadelphia Pride.

Board Member
On the Run…
Gretchen Santamour, a Partner in Philadelphia law firm Stradley Ronon and a member of Hyperion’s Board of Directors, and her daughter Grace completed the Broad Street Run (10 miles!) April 30.
In the community: Gretchen represents pro bono clients in Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases on behalf of Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project (CBAP) and previously served on the executive committee and board of that organization. She served as the President of the board of the Education Law Center, a not-for-profit law center that advocates for the rights of public school students. Last year the Law Center feted Gretchen for her remarkable service. In 2018 she joined the Board of Trustees of Arcadia University and serves as Vice Chair of that Board.

Balancing Act…
Jim McAlpin, Hyperion Board member & Partner, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, participated in Balancing Act Bank Risk Management During GFC 2.0, an April webinar you can see here. The webinar turned out to be particularly topical, given tumult in the banking industry this spring.
Jim is a nationally recognized speaker at financial industry conferences and contributes regularly to publications on bank and corporate governance related topics. He is also often quoted in banking industry publications.
Have we mentioned how fortunate we are to have such engaged, experienced leaders as Board Members?
