The year before I joined the Dallas City Council in 2007, the FBI named Dallas the most dangerous major city in America. That embarrassing designation pushed our city leaders to take action. Over the next two decades, our city consistently invested in public safety personnel and technology, which helped make our neighborhoods safer, helped draw businesses to our city, and brought investment into parts of southern Dallas once thought to be untouchable.

What doesn't make sense? We're learning there have been no drownings at Horn Island for 7 years. Statistically, this is highly improbable

While all of these are important aspects of smart financial planning, lowering credit card debt continues to be high on Marylanders' financial to-do lists. More than one-third (34 percent) of Americans surveyed name paying off credit card debt as a top financial goal for the year, according to a report from the National Endowment for Financial Education.

Chris Brown’s experience is an asset. Mayor John Whitmire still owes Houston an explanation of how his advisor’s employment arrangement squares with the standards set for city workers. The Power Houston operates under a strong-mayor form of government, giving Mayor John Whitmire substantial authority over the city’s administration and personnel. Like the mayors before him, he has enjoyed that power. But the power to hire does not eliminate the responsibility to explain how that hire serves the public and follows the rules.
| | HBCU Love on the Yard: Meet Hampton University’s Candace & Kenneth | |
| | | There is nothing on the planet quite like an HBCU homecoming. The exciting tailgates with red Solo cups and good eats in abundance, the can’t-miss halftime show (better known as the 5th quarter), the feel-good brunches, the lit parties, the impromptu Swag Surfin’ that can happen anywhere the mood hits, the energetic Divine 9 step shows, the multigenerational beauty of alumni chopping it up with current students, the hugs that assure you that although life is life-ing, everything is going to be alright. Oh…and the football game. The atmosphere is equally empowering and spiritual because in between all the joyous celebrations, we are reminded of the brilliance and tenacity of our brave, visionary ancestors who built HBCUs more than a century ago. The pride is palpable. In honor of this joyous and celebratory time for our culture, we’re honoring those couples who graduated from HBCUs, sometimes even on the same campus, and are now living their best lives together. Our Love on the Yard series is an intentional and necessary spotlight on Black love, Black excellence, and Black joy!

DAILY REMEMBRANCE
Grief has colored my world. Such stark contrasts between the then and now.
How bland the white days when I can't see what is before me.
In a fog of non-distinctiveness.
No form or fashion to my existence on these days, and yet, I see light.
Something bright and warm beckoning me.
The dark days of color bring with them such darkness that I can't venture out.
I stay still, sometimes unable to even speak.
Wrapping myself within myself.
Going round and round and round.
Seeing burst of red through the spinning.
Marking my journey before and after.
Marking my journey round and round in what seems a senseless rotation.
Marking my journey from then to now.
