STEM Learning for Idaho Kids

In July, I traveled to 10 Idaho libraries—including Glenns Ferry, Nez Perce, Craigmont, Lapwai, Culdesac, Winchester, Kooskia, Lewiston, Aberdeen, and Boise—and hosted a cartesian diver STEM activity in which kids learn about design principles and pressure utilizing a plastic bottle full of water, straws, and paperclips. Pictured are kids at the Aberdeen Library.

Educator Melissa Simmons

This second-grade teacher at Dworshak Elementary School in Burley, Idaho, has found the next generation of teaching tools for her students and for the teachers in her district.

A first-grader stands at the front of a classroom at Dworshak Elementary School in Burley, Idaho. He’s wearing a headset and addresses a class of second-graders in front of him. Hands pop up, and he strides over to answer their questions.

Second-grade teacher Melissa Simmons watches with pride. She has invited the boy to help teach the older kids how to code using the PBS KIDS ScratchJr app. And he’s really good at it.
Librarians: Idaho Storytime in a Box

IdahoPTV Education's 2022 Storytime in a Box program for Idaho libraries was a huge success!

During the new five-month program, we provided a total of 30 Idaho libraries with high-quality and engaging storytime content, books, activity materials, training, and support—all free of charge.

We sent 120 boxes containing 360 hardcover picture books and activity materials for participants to learn more about how to develop early literacy skills in their young patrons.

We reached more than 2,000 youth and caregivers during the first five months, and we are hard at work planning the 2023 program! Contact Community Engagement Specialist Trisha Mick for more info.

August Science Trek: Fish

Idaho is home to lots of native fish. Find out what they are and learn what is endangering our fish.

Each month, Science Trek explores a different topic, with short videos available on the Science Trek website, YouTube, and LearningMedia. The Science Trek website has facts, games, links and lesson plans correlated to Idaho and national science standards.
