Granite Prepared for Natural Disasters and Severe Weather

Hello Greetings!

As all communications since I started this newsletter, I wish that when this message arrives at your inbox, you can read it as a simple reminder that nature is powerful, and that you are safely working from home and in good health.

As extreme weather and natural disasters threaten large portions of the country, with unprecedented wildfires in California and back-to-back tropical storms impacting the Gulf Coast, Granite remains keenly focused on keeping its customers and first responders connected.

Over the years, we have confronted several extreme weather events side-by-side with our customers, and our team has risen to the occasion during each crisis. Similarly, we stand ready to assist our customers in California who are battling wildfires and customers along the Gulf Coast who are facing the dual threat of Tropical Storm Marco and Hurricane Laura.

Specific steps we have taken include:

  • Added to Granite’s emergency response staff, who will be present at Granite’s secure headquarters 24/7 throughout the storms and wildfires;

  • Prepared Granite’s numerous sources of backup power generation, including multiple diesel generators at Granite’s headquarters;
  • Activated Granite’s offsite disaster recovery center, an auxiliary worksite that is backed by multiple redundant power supplies; and

  • Conducted extra emergency response training specifically designed for resolving problems that might be encountered for customers with facilities in geographic regions, especially threatened by the storms and wildfires.

Granite is electronically e-bonded with all major underlying carriers. During emergencies, those carriers constantly update Granite’s emergency response teams on infrastructure damage and commit-times for any necessary repair work.

Granite’s emergency response teams have excelled during past weather-related emergencies. For example, Granite was fully staffed during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and remained fully functional through the use of our backup generators despite widespread power outages along the Eastern Seaboard.

Similarly, after Hurricane Katrina dealt a powerful blow to Gulf Coast states where many Granite customers were located, Granite’s emergency response teams worked closely with BellSouth / AT&T to have telephone services quickly restored or routed to different sites.
Be safe, be well, be healthy,

Raul
