Participate in a Family Medicine Plus Study

If you participate in Family Medicine Plus (FM+), we encourage you to consider participating in a cross-Canada study from Simon Fraser University about new longitudinal family medicine payment models.

While we continue to monitor FM+ closely, and we continue to hear positive feedback about how it’s transforming longitudinal practices, it’s important to get impartial feedback about the model from an independent third party, and this study will help do just that.

Check out how to get involved and learn more.

HEALTH SYSTEM UPDATES

CPSM Changes Coming on Codeine Product Classification

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba has announced that starting this fall, several codeine-containing products (including Tylenol #3, Tylenol #2, and Cotridin) will be added to the M3P drug list. The CPSM has provided resources on the change, including 8 key points, as well as a downloadable infographic with details.

In next week's edition of Vitals, we'll have a deep dive into how to prepare and minimize any additional burden in your practice.

New CancerCare Manitoba Building

Premier Wab Kinew and Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara have announced new steps to make a long-delayed, much-needed addition to CancerCare Manitoba a reality. A new building will be constructed at Health Sciences Centre’s Bannatyne health campus, across from CancerCare headquarters at 675 McDermot Ave. It aims to improve space, lighting, overall quality of care and the use of the newest techniques in cancer treatment and research.

We know that a new building does not necessarily mean a new culture at CancerCare Manitoba. We are still following issues at CCMB closely including the advice in our report last fall.

Learn more about the new building here.

Wildfires – Consider Pausing Travel

The Latest: As Premier Wab Kinew noted this week, wildfire evacuations in Manitoba are now the largest air evacuation in Canadian history, according to the Canadian Armed Forces.

Manitobans are being asked to reconsider non-essential travel in the province to help prioritize lodgings for wildfire evacuees. The Manitoba Wildfire Service continues to respond to 25 active wildfires across the province, a total of 116 wildfires to date, above the average for this date of 105 total fires.

#️⃣ Approximately 21,000 Manitobans from 27 communities have registered as wildfire evacuees with the Red Cross.

Measles – New Quick Ref Guide

The latest: There are now 98 confirmed cases of measles in Manitoba and 8 probable ones. Manitoba Public Health continues to monitor for measles cases and exposures that occur from cases in Manitoba, and exposures from out of province travelers to Manitoba.

A new Quick Reference Guide provided by Manitoba Public Health aims to support clinicians in recognizing and responding to measles cases and contacts.

CMA Scholarship

Applications open June 15 for the Tim Smith Health Leadership Scholarship, which aims to foster opportunities for emerging health care leaders to gain the skills and experience needed to drive positive change in an ever-evolving health care landscape.

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) provides the annual scholarship that covers the tuition and travel costs of the National Health Fellows Program.
