Volunteer Appreciation Brunch

Celia's House Kitchen Manager, Kevin, ensures all our residents and their families are well fed and that there are plenty of delicious treats for our events. Eleanor, Volunteer Coordinator, always has a smile on her face and did a fabulous job putting the brunch together.

Long-time Celia's House Volunteer, Barb Steely (left) with devoted Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice board member, Trish Narus. Barb and her husband Mike support Celia's House in many ways, but they are best known for their role on the Celia's House Garden Committee.

Dana (left) and Joyce take a moment to smile and share an embrace, expressing gratitude for each other's work at Celia's House. Dana volunteers weekly, and Joyce comes to Celia's House to offer Reiki therapy to our residents, their families, staff, and other volunteers who may want a session.

Honoring Every Resident

Cheryl French, Volunteer

Volunteer Coordinator Eleanor Crescenzi vividly recalls caring for a young resident shortly after she started working at Celia’s House. Eleanor remembered, “She was wonderful! We did her nails; had dance parties; enjoyed the common areas; and often had coffee with her. She was mobile until close to her death. After she died, we were grieving her loss and weren’t emotionally ready for a new resident to move into what we felt was still her room."

Celia’s House Culture Committee was asked if there was a process to support the staff in their love and their grief for the loss of a resident and be ready to welcome and care for a new person in the room.

The Rev. Mary Piper, Celia’s House Chaplain and a member of the Cultural Committee, along with two other chaplains on the committee, drew from several traditions to create The Room Honoring Ritual. It is a way for staff and volunteers to honor those they have cared for and formed relationships with, and to acknowledge the resident’s transition to death.

The Room Honoring Ritual begins following the death of a resident and after the room is cleaned.

A room window remains open throughout the ritual. Those in the room light a candle to symbolize the resident’s passing and take the moment to remember the beloved person who has left.

Water that has been blessed by representatives from various traditions is sprinkled into the four corners of the room with a sprig or flower. A blessing is offered to thank the person for the gift of sharing their last days at Celia’s House and to remember them with love. A welcoming for the new room resident is given.

A lavender sachet is placed on the door plaque to indicate that the room is ready for a new resident.

Championing Dignity at Life’s End:

Your Support Matters More Than Ever

Lily Herwald, Director of Development and Communications

Celia’s House’s goal is to ensure that individuals can live and die with dignityno matter their circumstances. At our organization, we believe that every life is extraordinary and meant to be cherished. To do this, we must raise money from our community and supporters.

Your contribution can make a significant impact by helping us provide high-quality care to our residents and their families. Thanks to an anonymous donor, gifts are matched up to $25,000 through May, allowing your donation to go twice as far.

This year we are raising funds for two specific programs:

  1. Our Spiritual Care Program provides emotional support to those facing a wide range of challenging feelings that often come at the end of life. Our chaplain and spiritual care volunteers are on call 24/7 to go to the bedside of our residents who may be struggling with emotional quandaries. Celia's House honors every person's journey and tradition.
  2. Additionally, our Care Fund provides financial assistance to those who cannot afford residential end-of-life care. We rely on the generosity of donors like you to continue providing equitable access to our services. This fund has supported people who’ve worked hard but cannot cover the entire cost of care.

Your donation can go toward our general operations that help with the ongoing expenses of running a nonprofit residence for hospice care.

Please donate today to help us continue our mission of providing compassionate care to all those in need. We have witnessed the significant difference our care makes in the lives of residents and their loved ones. Celia’s House provides a supportive environment for individuals who have been struggling with end-of-life care independently.

Thank you for supporting our mission. If you have any questions about how your financial contributions will be used, please contact me at 907-713-7814.

Quotes From Families

"I was at Celia's House almost every day visiting my dear friend while she was here. The care she received was remarkable. I could leave after our visits knowing she was being taken care of. When it got to be the very last days of her life, I did not leave her side, and the staff was so kind to me. This is a special place." -C
