BARCO PIRATA MARIGALANTE

700 ton sailing galleon built in 1987 and launched in 1992 to commemorate the 500TH anniversary of the discovery of America. It was a faithful replica of the Santa Maria, the ship that Christopher Colombus crossed the Atlantic

On October 10th the ship sunk as the crew was attempting to return to port to carry out technical repairs. Just off the coast the system malfunction worsened and the ship began to slowly submerge. The beautiful ship sunk below the waves quietly. All passengers safe. She will be missed. We have heard that she will be replaced by another replica of the 15th century galleon sailing ship in three months. She has been an icon of Puerto Vallarta for 30 years. We will miss the roar of her cannons and her nightly fireworks.
