Vernal Pool Hike

April 24 th (Wednesday), 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Every spring, small depressions in the northern forest floor come alive, filling with rain, melting snow, and eventually, salamander and frog eggs. By summer’s end, many of these vernal pools will have dried out, revealing little trace of the life they contained in April. Join us for a moderately-strenuous, 1.2-mile round trip hike to a hilltop vernal pool at the Horatio Colony Nature Preserve, where we’ll explore the exquisite, ephemeral world of spring-breeding amphibians. Meet at the Preserve parking lot on Daniels Hill Road in Keene at 1 p.m. Back by 3 p.m. For more information, contact Brett Amy Thelen at thelen@harriscenter.org or (603) 358-2065.

Co-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education, Horatio Colony Nature Preserve, and Cheshire County Conservation District.

April 28th (Sunday) 1:00 .-3:30 p.m.

Join Horatio Colony Nature Preserve Project Assistant, Meggie Donovan, for a unique program combining poetry and nature. The program will begin with a short lesson on poetry writing techniques. Participants will then explore the West Hill on a nature hike where they will experience the preserve and collect "picturesque" words for a writer's notebook. The program will explore language and learn how poetry is connected to our everyday lives. Participants will make and compose original three-line haiku poems using word collections. This is a chance to immerse yourself in a natural setting and release the boundless energy of creativity that is inside you in a fun and supportive setting. Bring your favorite pen or pencil and warm clothing to be outdoors. Registration is required for this event. Sign-up below or call 603-283-2115 or email colonypreserve@antioch.edu for details.
