Support for a Healthy Summer

Yes, the summer months bring sunshine, but they can also bring challenging changes in routine. Manet is here to help:

-Our Community Health Specialists can connect patients with food accessibility resources when kids are out of school for the summer. Contact your Manet site!

-Our Behavioral Health Team can help patients deal with mental health or emotional issues that can sometimes arise or worsen in the summer months. Manet patients can contact their site to make an appointment with a behavioral health clinician or visit us for Open Access Hours.

-Massachusetts and local communities offer a variety of resources to support families during the summer months while school is out. See below for a non-exhaustive list of resources in our communities.

-Don't forget to check your city or town website and social media pages for cooling centers on extremely hot days!

Summer Red, White and Blue Bites with Manet Nutrition

July 4 is behind us, but we can continue the celebration by eating colorful and nutritious foods all summer.

Red Foods (such as red onions, cherries, apples, tomatoes, pomegranates, raspberries, and red peppers) contain lycopene, which can improve heart, eye, and brain health while reducing the risk of cancer.

White Foods (such as mushrooms, onions, Greek yogurt, cauliflower, and jicama) contain fiber, vitamin C, and potassium.

Blue and Purple Foods (such as blueberries, grapes, blackberries, eggplant, figs, and purple cabbage) are rich in antioxidants that help protect cells from damage, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, cancer and inflammation.

Try these red white, and blue meals and snacks from EatingWell.com.

Seeing the Impact: Dr. Hopkins Receives Lions Club Award

Congratulations to Jeanne Hopkins, O.D., Director of Manet’s Vision Center, who was presented with the William T. Murphy Sight Award from Mass. Lions Eye Research Fund at the Quincy Lions Club Installation Ceremony on June 23. The award recognizes an individual or organization for their “outstanding and dedicated service to further the cause of eye research." Dr. Hopkins was recognized not only for her work as a liaison between the Quincy Lions Club and Manet’s Vision Center, but also for her work with Partners in Visual Health, which is an organization that brings optometry students and young optometrists to El Salvador to serve those in need.

Pictured with Dr. Hopkins (left) are Kris Richardson-Smith, Quincy Lions LCIF chair, and Sean Glennon, outgoing president.

July Health Observances

UV Awareness Month

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is the root cause of most skin cancers. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) recommends that you stay safe in the sun all year-round by following three simple steps while outdoors: 1) seek shade when appropriate, 2) wear sun-protective clothing and 3) apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

World Hepatitis Day (July 28)

There are five types of Hepatitis (A-E). Learn more about each type and available vaccines here. There is no effective vaccine against Hepatitis C. In those people who go on to develop chronic Hepatitis C infection, the infection is often undiagnosed because it remains asymptomatic until decades after infection, when symptoms develop secondary to serious liver damage.

The Manet prevention team offers Harm reduction supplies, risk assessment and reduction planning and free, walk-in screening for HIV, Hepatitis C, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Syphilis.

Join the Manet Team!

Do you dream of being part of a fantastic team and having the ability to make a real difference in people's lives? Manet could make that dream come true!

Manet Community Health is hiring across all sites in Quincy, Hull, Taunton and Attleboro at all levels, from primary care and behavioral health providers to a variety of clinical and non-clinical support staff.
