Kings Board of Education Special Meeting

The Kings Board of Education has placed a 6.4mill Operating Levy on the November 8, 2022, ballot. This is an important ballot issue for the Kings Local School District. Currently, the District is under fiscal oversight by the Ohio Department of Education due to our declining fund balance.

The levy will generate $7.5 million per year to support the day-to-day operations of the District. It will cost the Kings taxpayer $18.67 per month for every $100,000 of true home value. The average home in Kings is $250,000. The tax rate will decrease over time if home values continue to rise in the Kings District.

Last week we gave you details on the amount of state revenue we have received since the passage of the last levy. This week, we are going to outline the projected reductions if the levy does not pass.

The Kings budget is projected to have a negative cash balance by 2024. Based on the current Ohio School Funding model, revenues for Kings are not going to increase. In order to continue running the school district with a positive cash balance, as required by law, Kings either needs to pass an operating levy on November 8 or make significant, personnel, student programs, and service reductions. The District's expenses are projected to be higher than income next school year by $7 million. Without new revenue, reductions will need to be made to balance the budget.

In case you missed it, Kings Superintendent, Greg Sears presented to the Kings Board of Education in a Special Meeting on Monday, October 10, to discuss the $7 million in reductions that will need to happen if the levy does not pass.

One of those reductions affects Transportation. Currently, the District provides transportation for students in grades K-12 and also to private and parochial schools for students who live in the District.

If the levy doesn't pass, the District will shift towards a state minimum transportation model which eliminates busing for grades 9-12 and for private high schools. It will also cause the District to implement a 2-mile walk zone for students in K-8. This means that students who live within 2 miles of school, will either have to walk or provide their own transportation to and from school.

Click here to see the walk zones for each of our school buildings.

Community members are encouraged to visit our Levy FAQ page to learn more. We will continue to add questions to this page as we receive them.

Free and Reduced Lunch

Dear Parents,

For the past two years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has provided waivers to Child Nutrition Programs across the United States, allowing these programs to offer all students breakfast and lunch meals at no charge, regardless of income status. This waiver has expired. To be eligible for meal assistance, families must complete an application.

Also, for families that had an application on file for the 2021-2022 school year, this application expired on Monday, September 26th. A new application must be submitted every school year. If families have not reapplied, they must complete an application as soon as possible to restore this service for free or reduced meals.

We encourage all families to complete a Free/Reduced Meal Application so the student’s eligibility can be evaluated based on the program guidelines. If applications are needed in an alternative language, this can be provided, please contact your child's school. Students will be charged full price for meals until a Free/Reduced Meal is processed and the eligibility status of the student is determined.

Please click on this link below to complete your application today!

Time to Order KHS Yearbooks

Now is the time to order your 2022-2023 Yearbook! We've made ordering as easy as possible. Just go to yearbookforever.com and put in Kings High School.

We've also added a ship-to-home option, so you won't even have to worry about forgetting to pick it up. These make great holiday gifts!

We now also have a QR code to make ordering even easier.

Digital Flyers

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.

Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!

Join Our Team!

The District is still in need of substitute teachers and nurses, childcare aides, paraprofessionals, food service workers, and bus drivers.
