KHS Art Students Giving Back
|
|
Warren County Sheriff, Larry Sims visited Kings High School Painting classes last Friday. He talked about the importance of giving back and addressed the following questions:
What is community?
Why is it important to give back?
What does it mean to have purpose?
How can I give back by using my strengths/interests as a volunteer or a future occupation?
Sheriff Sims reached out to KHS Art teacher, Angie Guilfoyle after seeing the work that the Kings art students produced for the 9/11 Memorial Event over the last few years where he is a keynote speaker.
The KHS painting students are going to create a large-scale group painting addressing the quote- 'We don't heal through isolation, but in Community.' The students discussed the pandemic and how isolation can lead to issues with mental health. Connecting to people and to your community allows students to feel a sense of belonging and self-worth through helping others. Individual artmaking community service projects will be offered through Mrs. Guilfoyle this semester for graduation credit.
The location of the mural is to be determined but will likely be housed in the new Warren County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement buildings in Warren County.
The KHS Architecture students are also working on giving back to the community. They are currently designing outdoor pavilion spaces and building physical models for their designs. Students have the option to submit their models and sketches to the South Lebanon Elementary PTO who will then select the design(s) they like that will be used for some outdoor classroom spaces they want to build on SLE's campus. The PTO has $25,000 for this project and reached out to the KHS architecture classes for help in the design!
Stay tuned!

An update from Kings Social-Emotional Health Coordinator, Kim Sellers.
It’s hard to know when your child’s mood is “typical” behavior and when it is a sign of a mental health need. You are not alone in trying to define your child’s mood/behavior. There are resources to help you determine if your child could benefit from therapeutic support. You can start by talking with your child. Remember, talking about suicide won’t put the idea in someone’s mind.
Here is one way to start the conversation with your child about how they are feeling and how they are coping.
“I’ve noticed that lately you…..(change in behavior, mood, etc.) It is hard being a teenager and I want you to know that we can work together to help you find help/hope”.
If you have questions about your child/teen, consider speaking with your school counselor.
Make sure your child/teen has the 24-hour suicide/crisis hotline to use when a caring adult is not present. Call 1-800-273-8255 or text 4Hope to 839863. For Spanish, call 888-628-9454.
For immediate concerns, contact: Warren and Clinton County Hotline 877-695-NEED (6333). If your child/teen is having a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
