Kings and UC Partner for Tutoring

Kings Local School District and the University of Cincinnati (UC) were the recipients of a statewide mathematics and literacy tutoring grant that spans two years. These funds allow UC students to serve as tutors and provide high-quality, research-based tutoring to students.

The UC tutors are in every Kings building Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Many students have experienced learning loss due to the pandemic. These grant funds allow students to receive intensive tutoring to close the learning gap. It also provides a valuable professional experience for the UC students, many of whom are education majors. In fact, several of the tutors are Kings High School graduates!

KHS NAHS Creates Memories with Classmates

The members of the Kings High School National Art Honor Society (NAHS) held a special daytime art event for some of our Kings Junior High and Kings High School students.

With a superhero theme, the NAHS students created different crafts and baked a treat for the students. They also created a photo backdrop for the students to get their photos taken with their Captain America masks and shields.

Mrs. Cooke said, "It truly was an incredible opportunity!"

The Kings NAHS is advised by KHS Art teacher, Carrie Cooke. Members are Anna Lacey, Lily Ringler, Brooklyn Campbell, Jenna Tackett. Oliver Mack, Mali Robinson, Keira McCoy, Claudia Witter, Siri Vadrevu, Annika Kleinhenz, Nora Spelic, Zhana Burnside, and

Adrienne Maines.

KHS Art Students Participate in Memory Project

The Kings High School Art students in Mrs. Stacy Hoffert and Mrs. Angie Guilfoyle's classes recently participated in the Memory Project.

The Memory Project gets its name from its first intention, which was to provide handmade, heartfelt portraits as special memories to children in orphanages.

The KHS Drawing students created 60 portraits for orphans in India just by looking at their orphan's pictures. The portraits will be delivered at the end of the month and the art students will receive a video hopefully before the end of school of the children opening the portraits.

Guilfoyle said, "Together we are using art to reach a distant destination: a kinder world in which all youth see themselves in one another regardless of differences in their appearance, culture, religion, or circumstances. For all who believe in that kinder world on the horizon, it is impossible to turn around."

KHS Career Quest Program

The Kings High School Career Quest Program, a partnership with the United Way of Warren County and Sinclair Community College works with KHS seniors during the second semester to help them find their best path after graduation.

The students recently visited John R. Jurgensen Companies for a tour. This 85-year-old family-owned organization is a preferred supplier of asphalt, pavement, and aggregate products in the construction industry.

Students toured their headquarters offices to understand business positions such as finance, accounting, materials, and Quality Lab. They also toured the asphalt production-making facility and their heavy equipment and mechanics operations.

KHS Book Club Surprised by Author

The Kings High School Book Club had a surprise visitor during their final discussion over their novel selection, Widow Falls, by Kiersten Modglin.

As the club was preparing to hold a mock interview for the novel, they were surprised with a live Google Meet with Kiersten Modglin herself. Thankfully, the club had already prepared questions for what they thought was going to be an interview starring their Club Advisors, Jen Patterson, and Katie Isaacs, taking on the role of Modglin.

Throughout the meeting, Modglin shared aspects of her planning process for a new novel, writing tactics for making sure dialogue is realistic, her background and inspiration for new plotlines and twists, and she even had the club share their dream cast for characters in her novel. Throughout reading her novel, the KHS Book Club had already become members of Modglin's fan base known as the "K Mod Squad." Ms. Isaacs said, "Through the epic surprise and gracious interview, the club will now know that Modglin is a part of their 'Squad,' as well."

The book club is getting ready to start their next novel, Delta County, by J.L. Hyde. Hyde generously donated a signed copy of her novel to thank the KHS Book Club for their selection.

Digital Flyers

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.

Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!
