KHS Student Visionaries

Please help congratulate three Kings High School National Honor Society students; Grace Sims, Katie Gibson, and Julia Burke, for being a part of this year's Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Student Visionaries of The Year.

These students were nominated to represent our Kings community this year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For the past seven weeks, they have strategically organized at KHS and throughout the community such as Chuck a Duck Night, a Dodgeball Tournament, multiple food fundraisers with local businesses, a March Madness bracket challenge, and so much more!

Most importantly, these three and their team of other students have brought us all together to fundraise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Last weekend, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society held its Grand Finale, where all participating schools in the Cincinnati area attended for a celebration to conclude this year's fundraising. Our Kings Against Cancer Team raised nearly $30,000, which contributed to the grand total of $805,365! Our student leaders were additionally awarded with this year's Research Award on behalf of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!

KHS NHS Adviser, Katlyn Gilbert said, "Our Kings High School building and community are so in awe of them and honored by their fearlessness, dedication, and passion throughout this year's fundraiser. Their vision and goal to create a world without blood cancer was one of the most remarkable journeys that I have ever witnessed and been a part of. These students deserve the utmost recognition!"

Congratulations, ladies!

KJH Medical Detectives

Students in the Medical Detectives classes at Kings Junior High School are learning about the structure and function of their brains.

Students started by building a brain to scale out of paper and aluminum foil. They then coded a program to play a description of each part of the brain when the users touched or picked up each part of the brain. Students used Makey Makey kits to connect their brains to the computer.

Medical Detectives teacher, Amber Hawk said, "This activity will lead into our sheep brain dissection where they will get to see each part of an actual sheep brain."

KJH & KHS Hope Week

This week, the Kings High School and Kings Junior High Hope Squad celebrated Hope Week.

Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program. Students who participate in Hope Squad are nominated by their classmates as trustworthy peers. The program helps to reduce youth suicide through education, training, and peer intervention.

In honor of Hope Week, both Squads' goal was to spread joy and positivity. Both Squads planned activities during the week including visiting classrooms to share more about Hope Squad, theme dress-up days, and more.

Students also offered mental health awareness swag for students at lunch and did their best to increase awareness of Hope Squad to help reduce the stigma around mental health.

Special thanks to Shine Orthodontics for providing the ice cream treats!

KME Students Zoom With Former Classmate

Mrs.Amy Edwards' second graders at Kings Mills Elementary were fortunate to Zoom with a former classmate this week. Kento moved to Japan with his family in December. He attended Kings for 3 years before his dad's transfer to Japan.

It is a 13-hour time difference between here and there so it was a challenge to find a time when everyone was awake! Mrs. Edwards' students were so excited to see their friend and they had so many questions to learn all about his school, the food, his new house and neighborhood, and the holidays, customs, and pastimes in Japan.

The students have written letters back and forth including pictures. Kento's mom said Kento really enjoyed seeing his friends. She said he is already forgetting much of his English, so Kento is going to a Saturday English school.

Mrs. Edwards said Kento's family is hoping to return to the area by the time Kento is in middle school.

KHS Senior Discovery Research Day

One hundred twenty Kings High School Composition seniors defended their research this week during the Senior Discovery Research Day on Wednesday, March 29.

Their research started with two words: "what if." Two words of little importance, but when put together can change the world. Mrs.Katlyn Gilbert, a KHS English teacher said, "Simple 'what if's' bloomed in our minds, tugging us deeper into research until we reached our own gems of enlightenment." Their hope was to spur "what if's" for the witnesses of their research.

The students have been working on this project since January. Some of the subjects included, night school, a 4-day school week, vaping, chatGPT, Tik Tok, LGBTQ, social media, music, menstruation, workouts, sleep, trauma, grades, mental health, grades, autism, gambling, happiness, and more.

Community Art Nights Vision of KHS Art Teacher

After the tragic loss of her brother and father, Kings High School Art teacher, Carrie Cooke became a Random Acts of Kindness activist, believing that one person can make a difference. Despite being busy raising three children, teaching full-time, and supporting their extracurricular activities, she strove to use her talents to help others and create happiness and school spirit in her community.

She started a kindness crusade with her daughter, Kaleigh, now a KHS graduate. They launched many service projects, including decorating the school with positive messages, providing staff appreciation gifts, and auctioning off artwork to raise money for local charities. Through the Art and Kindness Club, they have raised over $4,500 for charities that help homeless families, provide meals for students, and support adults and children with disabilities.

In 2019, she created the Free Community Art Nights to promote kindness, family bonding, and the importance of giving. Her goal was to use her love of the arts to bring people together, and to create a more vibrant, connected, and resilient community. She said, "My journey of spreading kindness has been a wonderful experience. It has taught me that kindness is a powerful tool that can help heal and bring happiness to people's lives. It has helped me cope with the loss of my brother and father and has given me a purpose to strive for every day. By making others smile, I am able to find joy in life and appreciate the little things that make it so special. I hope that I am making a difference in the lives of the students in the Kings School District, the staff, and the community by offering the Free Community Art Nights."

Carrie also brought the National Arts Honor Society to KHS in 2022.

Thank you, Carrie, for all you do!
