Kings Bond Update

The Kings Local School District has placed a Bond Issue on the March 19 primary ballot. If approved by the community, the bond Issue would fund a new Kings High School and an addition at Columbia Intermediate, addressing the overcapacity challenges throughout the District.

Early voting has begun. Visit the Warren County Board of Elections website for additional information on early voting hours and requesting an absentee ballot.

As you see below, the bond language will say 5.971 mills, but due to creative financing and debt payoff, the actual bond impact to the property owner will be 3.5 mills, which is $123 annually per $100,000 home. Listen to the District's Financial Bond Representative, Kent Kashell as he explains the process in greater detail.

How much will the bond cost you if it passes? Click here to find out using our bond calculator.

If you have any questions regarding school finance, contact Kings Treasurer Mike Morrow at mmorrow@kingslocal.net.

TWO Swimming State Champions

Many congratulations to Kings High School Senior, Faith Rudowski and Sophomore Maya Schweikert who were named STATE CHAMPIONS at the OHSAA Division l State Swim Meet on February 17 in Canton, Ohio.

Faith claimed the top spot in the 100 Freestyle and 4th in the 50 Freestyle. Maya took the state championship in the 100 Backstroke. Both girls were a part of the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay which placed 4th.

The state swimmers competed in 13 events in the finals of this year's championship. The Kings girls State Team finished 7th overall and the boys finished 15th overall in the State. Additionally, the Girls 200 Medley relay and 400 Freestyle relay placed 4th in the state.

Congratulations to all of our swimmers who represented the Kings District so well on the state level!

Black History Month

Teachers and students across the District celebrated Black History Monty during the month of February.

At Columbia Intermediate School, the 5th graders created paper quilts. Mrs. Lopinto's 3rd-grade class at J.F. Burns Elementary did research projects to celebrate Black History Month. At Kings Junior High School, they held their Annual Black History Month Door Decorating Contest. Each Impact class chose an African American to research and then developed a theme for their door.

Kings Mills Elementary's celebration focused on literacy. They highlighted books by Black authors, made posters, and decorated bulletin boards around the building. Each KME teacher also displayed their favorite book by a Black author.

CIS Puttin' On the Hits

Congratulations to all the students at Columbia Intermediate School who participated in Puttin' on the Hits (POTH). This was the 40th annual show that featured groups of students lip-synching and dancing!

Huge thank you to Mr. Jeff Hamilton who has volunteered his time as the POTH announcer for the past 28 years, the Kings Board of Education for acting as judges, and the Kings High School students who volunteered as stage crew!

Pictured below are the top three acts in 5th and 6th grade.

International Students Helping Kings Students

Several international students who attend the University of Cincinnati have been volunteering their time to serve some of our English Language Learners at J.F. Burns Elementary School.

Through a grant from the University of Cincinnati, the students from India and Uzbekistan have been working with our students since the beginning of the school year. They work with students on math games and some social groups for those new to the school and country. They also assist teachers and students in the classroom and small groups outside the classroom.

While the international students from India graduated from U.C. in December with Master's Degrees in Computer Science and Engineering, they have continued to serve at JFB every week.

The U.C. students on scholarship from Uzbekistan have been volunteering at JFB, as well. JFB Assistant Principal, Jenny Wilson said that Russian and Uzbek are the top two foreign languages spoken in the building. She is currently working on increasing the number of Uzbek and Russian tutors to help our students.

The U.C. students, many of whom speak multiple languages, have been a great help, especially for our students who speak minimal or no English. They help to make the students feel more comfortable in their new environment, as well as contact the students' parents to answer any questions they may have and help them acclimate to their new school.

Wison said, "Many of the teachers have enjoyed getting to know the tutors and enjoy having them in their classrooms and just interacting with them. They are all treasures and we are blessed to have them!"

Many thanks to Temurbek Sulaymanov, Hari Manapati, Nuriddian Najmiddinov, and Krishna Singarapu who are making a difference in the lives of children! #KingsStrong

Oakwood Aeolians Visit KHS

Today, during choir classes at Kings HIgh School, Kings Choirs were honored to host The Aeolians of Oakwood University from Huntsville, Alabama!

The Oakwood Aeolians have a long history of excellence dating back to the 1940s. Their recognition includes national four-peat HBCU choral champions, three gold medals at the 2012 World Choir Games held right here in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the 2017 Choir of the World. Moreover, they are known for the spirit, welcome, and joy they bring to any room they enter.

As a stop on their current tour, students in the Kings Choir Family had the opportunity to hear them sing and learn about the choir, Oakwood University, college life, and their exceptional collaborative pianist, Dr. Wayne Buckner.

This Saturday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m. Kings Chamber Choir will sing side-by-side with The Aeolians and several returning members of the Kings Chamber Choir at Kettering Seventh Day Adventist Church. Several returning members of the Kings Chamber Choir from 2020 will also join in the performance.

Please contact Hope Milthaler at hmilthaler@kingslocal.net with any questions about the event.

Read more about the visit and the relationship between KHS Choir and The Aeolians here.

JFB/KHS Heritage Festival

The staff and students of both J.F. Burns Elementary and Kings High School collaborated to bring the community a Heritage Festival to celebrate and learn more about the cultures of some of our students in the school district.

JFB was packed on Thursday night filled with families visiting over 23 booths representing countries of our Kings students. Each booth contained history and information about the represented country, yummy food samples, and an activity for students. Each child was given a passport to take to each country to be stamped. Festival goers also had the opportunity to get a henna tattoo and listen to Japanese storytelling.

During the evening attendees were entertained by the KHS and 4th-grade JFB choirs, a drum demonstration by KHS Music teacher, Mike Maegly, and a Kyrgyz dance group made up of children ages 7-11 performing a Kyrgyz Folk Dance called Komuzchu.

KECC Glow Walk Fundraiser

Kings Early Childhood Center's brand-new PTO held its first fundraiser last week on Leap Day.

The first annual Glow Walk raised $2,558 to be used for future programs and play equipment. Families joined students for the obstacle course, dancing, and glow fun and LOTS of smiles filled the gym!

Kings Choir Family Field Trip

This year, every student in the Kings High School Choir Family was given the opportunity to tour and sing in Nashville. Members from all three choirs (Bass Choir, Chamber Choir, and Treble Choir) visited the University of Louisville and Belmont University, sang at and toured The Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the National Museum of African American Music, Ocean Way Studios, and RCA Studio B, where they recorded and cut their own CD.

Kings Choir Director, Hope Milthaler said, "One of the most exciting highlights was when the Bass Choir recorded “Blue Christmas,” accompanied by Jared Adamson, their collaborative pianist who wrote the arrangement for them, playing on the same piano in the same studio where Elvis recorded the original, and under blue lighting chosen by the production crew when they heard the story."

As a part of the DYNASTY Forward initiative in the choral program, where staff and students become more intentional about creating a space that welcomes more and more students into the Kings Choir experience, they will plan to visit the Music City on a 3- to 4- year rotation.
