Teachers of the Year Announced
|
|
Congratulations to Kings Junior High School English Language Arts teacher, Brooke Warner and South Lebanon Elementary Kindergarten teacher, Mary Reece who have been named winners of this year’s Project Excellence Award, sponsored by the Area Progress Council of Warren County.
Every year, the APC seeks to honor two innovative or excellent teachers from each Warren County school. Community members and staff are encouraged to nominate teachers for these awards. Mrs. Warner and Mrs. Reece will be honored at the 35th annual APC recognition banquet on May 4, 2022.
Mrs. Warner has taught in Kings for 15 years. She began her career at Columbia Intermediate where she taught 5th and 6th grade ELA and Social Studies and she currently teaches ELA at KJH. She is also a Kings graduate!
Mrs. Reece has taught kindergarten in the Kings School District for 35 years. She served as president of the Kings Education Association Board on two separate occasions, as well as served as a building representative and liaison for numerous years. She is a founding member of the Kings Stagelighters in 2008 and currently serves on that board, as well.
The Area Progress Council – a countywide private business organization – started Project Excellence in 1988 as a way to honor and recognize excellent educators. APC solicited funds to create an over $1 million endowment for this recognition program. Since its inception, Project Excellence has honored over 650 educators and awarded $500,000. This year's honorees will be given $500 for personal use and $250 to their district for a classroom or district-wide project.
Congratulations on this prestigious honor!

KHS Senior Discovery Symposium
|
|
On February 25, the Kings High School College Reading & Writing classes presented their senior research project at their Senior Discovery Symposium.
This year-end project challenged students to dive into what it means to be a student researcher. KHS English teachers Andrea Nichols and Katlyn Bare have both engaged in teacher research with their Master's program and the amount of discovery they had personally was something they wanted to transfer over to their students.
The classes spent time working on inquiry, where students lead and facilitated class discussions surrounding different topics they were passionate about or what was currently trending such as mental health days in school, remote learning (benefits and negatives), school gun violence, and the opioid crisis.
This discussion led students to develop and find their own "what if" questions. They spent a lot of time brainstorming and crafting their research questions. After this, analyzing voices who have already contributed to their research conversations (experts), and highlighting their potential gaps, assumptions, and methods, students had to go through a proposal approval in order to then use their methods to collect data.
The seniors collected data through surveys and interviews and then found patterns and outliers. They crafted not only an entire multi-page research narrative essay, but also produced a handout and presentation when they defended their work to their peers, staff, and parents/guardians. Ms. Bare said, "Mrs. Nichols and I are incredibly proud of their work and engaging in the research process. This will be a stepping stone to the future research that they do when they leave us and enter their next phase(s) of education."
Watch the video below as Ms. Bare explains more of the process.

CIS Student Participates in National Ballet Competition
|
|
Congratulations to Columbia Intermediate School 5th grader, Amelia Legault for her success in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), the world's largest non-profit international student ballet competition and scholarship program.
Amelia won the distinguished honor of being invited to Finals in Tampa, Florida where she competed against almost 200 other ballerinas from across the world. Amelia performed two solos, a variation from La Esmeralda in the classical category and Leave a Light On in the contemporary category. Her contemporary piece was choreographed by Kings Dance Team member, Kaityln McCorkle.
In order to be selected for Finals, Amelia competed at her first regional YAGP appearance in March in Indianapolis. There she placed in the top 12 and was the only ballerina from southern Ohio to earn a spot in the Finals. Approximately 1,200 students are hand-selected each year by the YAGP panel of judges to proceed to the Finals where they are seen by the directors and representatives of the world's leading dance academies.
YAGP is open to dance students of all nationalities aged 9-19 years old. It annually conducts regional auditions in the United States and around the world, with the Final Round of the competition held in Tampa every April. It’s considered the American Idol of ballet because it is a competition where future star dancers are scouted.
Each year, over 10,000 dancers participate in the competition auditions YAGP conducts in more than 25 locations in North America and international locations including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Paraguay.
Amelia dances for LeJeune Dance, in Blue Ash, under the direction of Hannah Dorfmeuller and Steve Beirens.
