NO SCHOOL for Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse on April 8 - NO SCHOOL for staff and students.

For the first time since 1806, Ohio will be the site of a total solar eclipse. This once-in-a-lifetime event will take place on Monday, April 8, 2024. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon's path crosses directly in front of the sun. Many parts of the state will be in total darkness for a few minutes during the midafternoon.

Experts are predicting that the sun will be at least 98% blocked by the moon in the Kings Local School District surrounding communities. The eclipse is estimated to begin in our area around 2:00 p.m., with the maximum totality around 3:11 p.m., and ends at approximately 4:30 p.m. The timing of the eclipse presents a safety challenge as it will occur during elementary dismissal times.

Our concern is that there will be students on buses, walking, or driving home during the peak of the eclipse. Our student’s safety is a concern because partial phases of any eclipse can only be safely viewed with specialized eye protection.

Additionally, this event is expected to draw large numbers of tourists to Ohio. The Ohio Department of Workforce and Development is warning that the eclipse could significantly impact traffic, as well as cell service and internet bandwidth.

For these reasons, and to align with all Warren County school districts, the Kings Local School District will be closed on Monday, April 8, 2024.

KHS Senior Reflection Night

Kings High School Seniors participated in the annual Community Service Reflection Night on Thursday, April 4. This is a night when all seniors report how they performed their required community service hours.

In order to graduate, KHS seniors must fulfill 50 hours of community service. During the Senior Reflection Night, students give a short presentation about the impact of community service on their lives. Many students used technology such as videos, movies, or PowerPoint presentations to reflect on their service experiences.

Kokorodza Marimba Receive New Instruments

Over Spring Break, Kings Kokorodza Marimba Ensemble took delivery on a new bass marimba and baritone marimba.

These instruments were hand-built by Joel Laviolette in Austin, TX. This week, the Ensemble had the opportunity to rehearse with the new instruments. Shown below are Kings Junior High School student Isaac Hoeting (on the bass marimba to the left) and Keaton Collins on the baritone marimba.

The Ensemble will show off the new instruments when they perform at Findlay Market on Sunday, April 28.

Kings Hoxworth Blood Drive

It's that time again! The Kings High School/Jorge Gonzalez Memorial Hoxworth Blood Drive is coming up on Wednesday, April 10 from 10:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The event will be held in the KJH Multi-Purpose Room - SIGN UP HERE!

In October 2021, we lost an incredible teacher, colleague, and friend to covid. His name is Jorge Gonzalez. He was a KHS Spanish teacher and very passionate about life-saving blood donation. Jorge started coordinating Hoxworth Blood Drives in January 2004 and hosted his last one in September 2021. Under his coordination, the drives collected 1262 units of blood; the potential to save the lives of more than 3786 patients - that’s LEGACY! Let's continue Jorge's legacy by donating blood to save lives.
