KHS Work Study Celebration

Kings High School Work Study students were celebrated on May6, for their accomplishments this school year.

Students in the Multiple Disability classes at Kings High School participate in a work-study program. The work-study students perform tasks at Kings High School such as shredding, recycling, and therapy dog walking. The students also ran the "Bow Wow Bakery" dog bone business, which has become quite successful.

Work-study students also work at community businesses and organizations, such as Rivers Crossing Community Church, Le Peep Restaurant, Clutter to Care, and Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

Mrs. Anitra Gardner from Kramer's Sew N Vac (pictured above), who also has a student in the class, donated an embroidery machine to the class so they can use it to embroider items for Bow Wow Bakery, and more.

Each student received a certificate for their work and had refreshments after the ceremony.

Kings Theatre Presents Kaylyn Daumeyer Scholarship

Congratulations to Kings High School senior, Jaclyn Oen who received the Kaylyn Daumeyer Scholarship at last week's production of "Little Shop of Horrors."

Kings Stagelighters presented her with a check for $1,000 from the Daumeyer family in memory and honor of their daughter, Kaylyn (pictured).

The Daumeyer's created a fund to support the arts at Kings after their daughter, Kaylyn passed away. Kaylyn loved her time on the Kings stage. This is the 10th year presenting a scholarship to a senior that has been involved in the theatre program while at Kings.

KECC Preschoolers Publish a Book

The preschoolers in Miss Christina Cain's class at the Kings Early Childhood Center recently embarked on an enriching journey of creating a collaborative class book called, "Animal Alphabet A to Z."

The process began with thoughtful deliberation to choose an animal to represent each letter of the alphabet. Through discussion and research, they expanded their understanding of the animals they chose.

Then, they began the artistic part of the process by painting the animals using their hand to transform them into vibrant representations. They then added intricate details to capture the animals. After, they selected descriptive words corresponding to the chosen animals which further enhanced their understanding of language.

This guided project served as a platform for cultivating essential life skills among the students, including responsibility, patience, awareness, and teamwork. Cain said, "The project not only promoted collaboration and participation but allowed the students to witness the tangible outcomes of their hard work and joint effort. We take immense pride in the accomplishments of our class and are grateful for the opportunity to enrich each child's educational journey."

This week, the teachers hosted a celebration to honor the authors for their hard work.

KHS Seniors Defend Research

On May 8, the Kings High School College Reading & Writing classes presented their senior research project at their Senior Discovery Day.

This year-end project challenged students to dive into what it means to be a student researcher. KHS English teacher Katlyn Gilbert wanted to pass along the amount of discovery a person gets while doing research.

The classes spent time working on inquiry, where students lead and facilitated class discussions surrounding different topics they were passionate about or what was currently trending such as athletics in high school, social media and the effects on mental health, and more.

This discussion led students to develop and find their own "what if" questions. They spent a lot of time brainstorming and crafting their research questions. After this, analyzing voices who have already contributed to their research conversations (experts), and highlighting their potential gaps, assumptions, and methods, students had to go through a proposal approval in order to then use their methods to collect data.

The seniors collected data through surveys and interviews and then found patterns and outliers. They crafted not only an entire multi-page research narrative essay, but also produced a handout and presentation when they defended their work to their peers, staff, and parents/guardians. Ms. Bare said, "I am incredibly proud of their work and engaging in the research process. This will be a stepping stone to the future research that they do when they leave KHS and enter their next phase(s) of education."

KJH Students Go on a Special Hike

The students in Suzanne Dwyer's class at Kings Junior High School went on a special adventure on Wednesday, May 8.

The class partnered with LUKE5ADVENTURES, a local non-profit organization that uses specialized equipment to hike with those who can't hike themselves. Using a very unique piece of equipment, they are able to take individuals living with a disability on hikes to places never accessible to them..

This week, LUKE5 helped KJH 8th grader Isaiah Kashoko, who is confined to a wheelchair, take his first hike. He and his class went into the woods at Carter Park. Volunteers helped to push, pull, and do whatever was needed to make sure that Isaiah had a great experience.

Ms. Dwyer said, "It was the most satisfying experience for all of us! Thanks to Miss India Ball, Isaiah's nurse, for making all of the arrangements."

LUKE5 has eight chapters across the U.S. that offer the "Hike of a Lifetime" for anyone with mobility issues.

Kings Coops

Kings High School Zoology program is excited to present the innovative Hatch & Prosper Project, also known as "Kings Coops."

This authentic project-based learning experience has engaged our students in a hands-on exploration of avian biology, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that covers science, business, and technology. Students have been divided into specialized teams, tackling roles from research, incubation and chick care to business planning and social media marketing.

They are raising and studying various chicken breeds, including White Silkie Bantams, Ayam Cemani, Ameraucana, and White Crested Polish. This venture not only enhances our curriculum but also fosters community connections through partnerships with local farms, providing a real-world context that enriches our students' learning and preparation for the future.

Check out the Tik Tok the students made to introduce the chicks.

KHS Zoology teacher, Tammi Snell is overseeing the project.

Kings Freshman Camp

Moving up to high school from junior high can be a scary time for some students. To make that transition a little less stressful and a little easier, Kings High School hosted Kings Freshman Camp Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10.

This 2-day event introduced upcoming freshmen, (this year's current 8th graders), to KHS student leaders who will help ease them into their first year as high schoolers. The first day started with an introduction from Kings Superintendent, Greg Sears who encouraged the incoming freshmen to get involved in high school.

The students were treated to a tour of the high school, team-building activities, guest speakers, student speakers, and lots of fun and laughter packed into the two days. A highlight of the event featured eight KHS students who shared with the upcoming freshmen times where they had to overcome some sort of adversity or an obstacle in their life in a segment called "I overcame."

Additionally, they were divided into “families. This year there were forty-four families. ” Upperclassmen “parent” those families— creating relationships and hopefully making the freshmen feel more comfortable in their new high school home. Nearly 150 juniors and seniors volunteered and KHS Juniors, Jack Phelps and Ava Gendreau were this year's KFC Captains.

Many awards are given but the most coveted award is the Family of the Year. This years winner was Family #28 – Royalty.

The whole day was facilitated by fifteen KHS staff members who poured themselves into the students to ensure they had a positive experience. Thank you to KFC organizers, Valerie Eldridge, Lindsay Six, and Morgan Kaufman.

SLE First Grade Wax Museum

This week, the first graders at South Lebanon Elementary hosted their annual Animal Wax Museum.

There so many animals represented. The students researched an animal, wrote about it, memorized a speech to share, and dressed like their animal for the big day.

We visited each first grade classroom. Check out this video of our students in action!
