Kings Treasurer, Mike Morrow updated the Kings Board of Education this month on the cost reductions that the District has made. He has identified over $1.6 million in reductions to the Kings budget.
The first significant reduction to the budget is a health insurance opt-out program. Employees were offered to opt-out of Kings insurance to be covered by a spouse's insurance. Over 150 employees took advantage of the program saving the district $1.2 million dollars annually. This will be continuing savings for the District.
Next, the District identified employees who were eligible for retirement and offered them to retire and rehire. This Personnel Savings Plan will save the District $260,000 annually.
The District is always assessing insurance rates to be competitive and to potentially save money. The District has changed dental insurance companies that offered a better financial package at a savings of approximately $40,000 annually through fiscal year 2025.
Finally, one last savings of $120,000 annually and continuing is the reduction of a Central Office Administrative position.
The District will continue to work to look for creative ways to maintain quality but do it in a fiscally responsible way.

KHS Student Receives a Perfect ACT!
|
|
Congratulations to Kings High School junior, Sam Webster who recently learned he scored a 36 -- the highest possible score -- on the ACT college admissions and placement exam.
Fewer than half of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2021, only 4,055 out of 1.29 million students who took the ACT earned a top composite score of 36.
The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science, each scored on a scale of 1–36. A student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. The score for ACT’s optional writing test is reported separately and is not included within the ACT composite score.
"Earning a top score on the ACT is a remarkable achievement," said ACT CEO Janet Godwin. Kings High School Principal Doug Leist agrees. "This is one of those academic achievements that you hear about and leaves you in awe. We are so proud of Sam! It is such a testament to our students, parents, teachers, and community that we are doing things right in the KLSD!," he said.
The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. Students who earn a 36 composite score have likely mastered all of the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in first-year college courses in the core subject areas. ACT scores are accepted by all major four-year colleges and universities across the U.S.
Sam is the same student who earned a perfect score on the Advanced Placement exam in Computer Science in the Spring of 2021. He is the son of Lyle and Jennifer Webster.

KHS Hope Squad Members on National Council
|
|
Two Kings High School Students have been chosen to serve on the National Hope Squads Council.
Congratulations to KHS Juniors, Diane Frecker and Brendan Stock who applied and were selected to be on the National Hope Squads Council along with juniors and seniors throughout the country who have served on their local Hope Squads for at least one year. They will continue to serve on their local squad while also serving on the National Council.
Diane and Brendan wrote an essay along with submitted a video in hopes to be chosen. Kings High School Lead Hope Squad Adviser, Lisa DeBord said, "I am proud of their courage, passion, and determination to learn more about mental health, support their peers at the high school, and normalize the discussion surrounding suicide. They both bring sunshine and positivity when they enter a room and will be wonderful students to represent teenagers around Cincinnati and help end the stigma of mental health. I cannot wait to see what the next year has in store for both of them!”
Diane and Brendan will begin their important work in August 2022.

On Thursday, May 19, the Kings High School Baccalaureate Ceremony took place at Christ's Church in Mason. It was a very special night for the KHS Seniors.
The student-led Baccalaureate Ceremony is a non-denominational event that provides a personal opportunity for students and their families to reflect on graduation as a rite of passage. Students gave speeches, sang, and performed for their parents, teachers, and peers.
