Mrs. Shepherd's first-grade class at Kings Mills Elementary held an indoor campout on Monday. Each child had their own tent. There was a fishing pond and a large silent reading tent as well as a campfire. The children rotated through nine activity stations. Mrs. Shepherd said, "Of course, no campout would be complete without Smores for a snack! The kids had a blast!" | |

The students at J.F. Burns Elementary have been reading furiously to win this year's Laps for Literacy.
From January to April students log every minute of extra-curricular reading they do. Those minutes are added up and calculated into laps that JFB Principal, Mrs. Montag has to walk around Landen Lake. This year students read a total of 991,817 minutes!
This year’s Top Readers were: Kindergarten - Caitlin Lomison; 1st grade- Jaanvi Viveka; 2nd grade - AJ Bersaglia; 3rd grade - Gracelyn Bersaglia; and 4th grade - Abigail Pohl; Top Classes were Mrs. Rumelhart, Mrs.Tilling, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Bogard, and Ms. Butts
Mrs. Montag walked six laps around Landen Lake – 18 miles! The entire student body lined the J.F. Burns drive to cheer on Mrs. Montag, the top readers and classes as they began the first lap. Kings Superintendent, Greg Sears, and Assistant Superintendent, Dana Martin joined Montag on the first lap.
This year's Lemonade Stand also raised a whopping $1,375 that will used to help defray the cost of the training for JFB's new therapy dog, Sunny. Way to go! Keep reading this summer!

Kings Social Emotional Health Coordinator, Kim Sellers with some information about mental health resources for the summer.
Managing a child’s mental health symptoms and finding the right treatment can be overwhelming for the entire family. Yet it’s important to connect to appropriate and effective care for children who are struggling. Beckett Springs Summer 2023 Child and Adolescent Program offers compassionate, evidence-based outpatient programs that provide critical, early interventions that lead to better long-term outcomes. We treat depression, anxiety, ADHD, impulsivity, mood regulation, self-esteem issues, substance use, and trauma concerns.
During the summer months, our day programs for kids ages 5+ offer mental health stabilization, skill-building activities, therapeutic peer interaction, and medication management. Our structured, healing environment promotes overall well-being outside of the academic and social pressures associated with the school year.
Better mental health begins with an assessment – a conversation with one of our behavioral health professionals to determine the right level of care for each child. Call today to learn more about our summer programs and schedule an assessment.

The Summer Slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn't in session. Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during summer break actually slip in reading ability by the time autumn rolls around.
We have provided you with some Summer Reading Programs in our area to help your students. Thank you for supporting your student to prevent the Summer Slide! Thank you to Mrs.Bowman for providing this list!

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.
Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!
