The students at J.F. Burns Elementary have been reading furiously to win this year's Laps for Literacy.
From January to April students log every minute of extra-curricular reading they do. Those minutes are added up and calculated into laps that Mrs. Montag has to walk around Landen Lake. This year students read a record-breaking total of 1,098,685 minutes!
This year’s Top Readers were: Kindergarten - Ashton Heizman; 1st grade- AJ Bersaglia; 2nd grade - Gracelyn Bersaglia; 3rd grade - Abigail Pohl; and 4th grade - Elise Conley; Top Classes were Mr. Brown, Mrs. Fischer, Mrs. Swanson, Mrs. Caudell, and Mrs. Vingum.
Mrs. Montag walked six laps around Landen Lake – 18 miles! The entire student body lined the J.F. Burns drive to cheer on Mrs. Montag, the top readers and classes as they began the first lap.
This year's Lemonade Stand also raised a whopping $977 for the Casting Freedom Organization. Way to go! Keep reading this summer!

Financial Literacy at KHS
|
|
The students in Mike Stevens Government classes Kings High School have a financial literacy curriculum where the students have the opportunity to learn a little more about dealing with everyday finances.
Laura Stanton from the Ohio State University Extension Office seen in the video below, was at Kings High School on Friday, April 29 where the students participated in a program called "Real Money, Real World."
This program is a simulation where students are given a career, a certain number of children, and a monthly paycheck. The students then have to learn to budget for their expenses. Some learned some hard lessons!
A new Ohio law passed this year requires all students entering 9th grade after July 2022 to earn half a credit in financial literacy. Kings will be requiring students in the Class of 2026 to take this new course during their junior or senior year of high school. Next fall, teachers and administrators from KHS will work to review the state standards for financial literacy and will create the course curriculum and select resources to offer the new class during the 23-24 school year.

For the past two years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided waivers to Child Nutrition Programs across the United States, allowing these programs to offer all students breakfast and lunch meals at no charge, regardless of income status. This program expired on the last day of school this year for school meals.
Beginning next school year (August 2022) we will go back to our normal lunch service. Families will need to complete a Free/Reduced Meal Application in order to receive free or reduced meals at school. Students who do not qualify for Free/Reduced Meals will need to purchase meals at school next school year.
If you think that your family qualifies for Free/Reduced meals, even if you think you may not, it is very important to fill out an application NOW. This program is confidential.
This application will provide carryover coverage for the first 30 days of school, and upon the student’s eligibility will provide free or reduced breakfast and lunch upon the return of the new school year.

The Summer Slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn't in session. Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during summer break actually slip in reading ability by the time autumn rolls around.
We have provided you with some Summer Reading Programs in our area to help your students. Thank you for supporting your student to prevent the Summer Slide!
