Since 2020, the Kings Board of Education has engaged in discussions to achieve financial stability. Those discussions have continued with our current Kings Treasurer, Mike Morrow.
Over the last few months, Mr. Morrow, the Board of Education, and the District Administrative Team have carefully examined the revenues and expenditures of the District. They found that Kings consistently spends in the bottom half of Ohio districts per student while focusing spending on student instruction and student services.
Kings doesn't anticipate additional state support, and Kings is reliant on property taxes due to the current funding mechanism adopted by the state of Ohio. Consequently, levy planning and the development of community support for local property tax levies is an integral part of the District’s financial planning. The last operating levy approved by taxpayers in 2016 was supposed to last 3 years, but the district was able to make it last 6.
The Kings Board of Education has been involved in discussions about the financial stability of the district, and the board may start the process of putting an operating levy on the ballot in November 2022 at the June 14th meeting.
On the Kings website, you will find the Financial Stability page where you can view the presentations and video of each meeting. Additionally, on that page, you will find the link to the Warren County Auditor's website where you can look up the value of your home or property used by the County to calculate property taxes, and then use the levy calculator to calculate what the impact of the levy could be on your taxes.

Now that the 2021-2022 school year is complete, we have already started planning for next school year!
The last couple of years, we have started school with a "staggered start" where we brought smaller groups of students in at a time to give our students and staff the opportunity to begin to form relationships.
We will be staggering the start of the 2022-2023 school year as you see below.

Former Kings Superintendent Recognized by Historical Society
|
|
On May 6, 2022, the Warren County Historical Society celebrated its Founder's Day. As a part of the celebration, the Society celebrated the dedication of the Warren County Teachers' Monument.
After 60 years in storage, the bell that sat at the Pleasant Street School was repurposed and placed to honor not only teachers, but aides, office workers, and all other staff and volunteers of the Warren County school systems, past, present, and future. The bell is the only one of its kind in Warren County.
During the celebration and dedication of the bell, an educator from each of the county's schools was recognized and thanked for being a prominent educator in the county over the years. Former Kings Superintendent, John Lazares was recognized for the Kings Local School District.
Lazares served as Kings Superintendent from 1992 to 1996. In his 40 years in education, he was an advocate for the children in Warren County. Mr. Lazares even has a school named in his honor. The John Lazares Alternative School, formally known as the Warren County Alternative School was renamed to honor Lazares for his vision to help at-risk students. It was Lazares' vision to help this particular group of students at a time when alternative schools weren't available. The school opened in 1998 and was renamed in his honor in 2013.
Congratulations, Mr. Lazares!

Our Kings High School students really made a difference in our community this year!
InnerView tallied all of the service hours performed by KHS students from June 1, 2021 through May 31, 2022. Our students performed a whopping 17,649 hours of service in 3,919 service activities. The community impact from these students will be felt for years to come!

Beginning next school year (August 2022) we will go back to our normal lunch service. Families will need to complete a Free/Reduced Meal Application in order to receive free or reduced meals at school. Students who do not qualify for Free/Reduced Meals will need to purchase meals at school next school year.
If you think that your family qualifies for Free/Reduced meals, even if you think you may not, it is very important to fill out an application NOW. This program is confidential.
This application will provide carryover coverage for the first 30 days of school, and upon the student’s eligibility will provide free or reduced breakfast and lunch upon the return of the new school year.

The Summer Slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn't in session. Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during summer break actually slip in reading ability by the time autumn rolls around.
We have provided you with some Summer Reading Programs in our area to help your students. Thank you for supporting your student to prevent the Summer Slide!
