State Report Card Results

The 2022-2023 school report cards were released by the Ohio Department of Education. The ODE rating system is now in its second year of using the star rating, switching from its former use of letter grades.

Schools were graded out of five stars in specific categories: Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Graduation, and Early Literacy for a possible total of 25.

The ratings are out of five stars:

  • One or two stars – below state standards.
  • Three stars – met state standards.
  • Four or five stars – exceeded state standards.

Kings received an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. We also received a 5-star rating in both gap closing, and early literacy.

Gap closing looks at several data points to assess whether student subgroups based on race, ability, and economic status are meeting state standards.

The Early literacy rating comes from information from third-grade reading tests, fourth-grade promotions, and literacy improvement from kindergarten to third grade.

The Ohio School Report card is just one snapshot of a student's success. The Kings District published a Quality Profile that aligns with the strategic initiatives of the District. It gives a more detailed look at what our community, staff, and students value in our schools. While state report cards tell part of the story, there are many other important components that make up a comprehensive, high-quality educational experience for students in the Kings Local School District.

KHS National Merit Semifinalists

We are very pleased to announce that two Kings High School Seniors have been named 2024 National Merit Semi-Finalists.

Congratulations to Cooper Tinsley and Jessica Earle who are among more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring. These two are now among a nationwide pool of Semifinalists who represent less than one percent of high school seniors in the U.S.

In order to enter the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program, the then-high school juniors took the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Over 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools take the exam. The Semifinalists include the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Congratulations to Cooper and Jessica! You make Kings proud!

KHS Military Recruiters

A big thank you to our Kings High School military recruiters who were in attendance at last Friday's Military Appreciation Game. These men and women have not only served our country in many honorable ways but also spent time engaging with our students to help them understand military career paths.

Pictured here are Army recruiters Tyler Gifford and Ryan Castello, Marine recruiter Justice Rees, and Air Force recruiters Corey Baxley and Drew Fannin. Not pictured are Navy recruiters James Stauffer and Dylan Reboulet.

Since 2018, 46 KHS students have committed to serving our country. Many thanks to Debby Henderson in the KHS School Counseling Office for the time she puts into this important work.

We appreciate all of their service to our country and time with our students.

KJH Cheerleaders Volunteer at Matthew 25

The Kings Junior High 7th and 8th-grade Cheerleading Squads visited Matthew 25 Ministries last Saturday morning.

The squads spent their time sorting through donated clothing. What a great team-building activity! #strongertogether

2023 KHS Grad Earns Perfect AP Score

Congratulations to 2023 Kings High School graduate, Alex Schmidt who not only received a perfect score of 5 on his AP 2-D Art and Design exam in May 2023 but was also one of only 337 students in the world to earn every point possible on the exam, receiving the maximum score on each potion of the exam.

Trevor Packer, Head of the Advanced Placement Program for the College Board said, "This outstanding accomplishment is likely a direct reflection of the top-quality education being offered at Kings High School. We applaud Alex's hard work and the AP teacher (Mrs. Kelly Shields) responsible for engaging students and enabling them to excel in a college-level course."

Free & Reduced Lunch Information

The Kings Local School District Food Service Department would like to remind families that assistance is available for Student Meals. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine if their student is eligible for assistance.

Students who were approved at the end of last year for the free and reduced meal program automatically (temporarily) qualified this year (for the first 30 days of school). This deadline is Wednesday, September 27. If a new application is not completed and processed by September 27, the previous year’s eligibility status is no longer valid; students will return to a full paid meal status. So it is important for families to complete the meal application prior to this deadline in order to extend their student's eligibility. Parents or Guardians will be responsible for paying for any charges that incur until the free or reduced meal application is fully processed and notification of eligibility is determined.

Free and Reduced Meal Applications can be obtained in the front office of your child’s school, as well as from the Kings Local School District’s website. You can also apply for the program online at https://payschoolscentral.com. If meal assistance is needed please complete an application; this program is designed to help families. Please check your eligibility by completing an application TODAY.

Families that currently have outstanding lunch balances are encouraged to pay these balances in a timely manner. If you have questions please contact the Food Service Department at 513-398-8050 ext 10027 or email at jarlinghaus@kingslocal.net.

BUS COUNT WEEK

We want to remind all families that October 2-6 is the annual count week for our transportation department.

Kings receives funding from the state of Ohio based in part on each student that rides the bus during this period. Last year, Kings received $376 for each student who rode during count week.

We encourage our students to ride October 2-6 if they plan to ride throughout the year!

National Leader in Education Innovation to Speak at Kings

The Kings District is excited to host Dr. Bill Daggett on Thursday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Kings High School to present - The Future of Education - Preparing Students For Their Future, Not Our Past. Learn how A.I. and emerging technologies impact the skills, knowledge, and attributes students need to succeed in the changing workplace and society.

For over 30 years, Dr. Daggett has crisscrossed the nation and the industrialized world to lead school reform efforts to effectively prepare students for their future. He is recognized worldwide for his proven ability to move pre-K-12 education systems towards more rigorous and relevant skills and knowledge for all students.

His message aligns with the District's Power 5 Future Skills Strategy and Action Plan that provides our Kings students with all the tools to navigate an ever-changing world and to be highly competitive and prepared for success beyond the walls of our school district. Those skills are critical thinking, collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and career, college, and life readiness.

This session is free to the community and sponsored by High Aims. We hope you'll join us!
