State Report Card Results

The 2021-2022 school report cards were released by the Ohio Department of Education. This year, they used a new star-based rating system that replaced the former A through F grades.

Schools were graded out of five stars in specific categories: Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Graduation, and Early Literacy for a possible total of 25. Kings received 22 out of a possible 25 stars, which ranks Kings in the top 10 in Southwest Ohio.

The ratings are out of five stars:

  • One or two stars – below state standards.
  • Three stars – met state standards.
  • Four or five stars – exceeded state standards.

In averaging star ratings by county, Delaware comes out on top with an average of 21.5 stars per district. This is followed by Geauga (20., Medina (20.7), and Shelby and Warren counties (20.5 each).

Kings received a 5-star rating in achievement, gap closing, and early literacy.

Only 92 districts in the state received a 5-star rating in achievement. The average achievement rating for districts across the state is 3.48 stars.

The Achievement component represents the number of students who passed the state tests and how well they performed on them. This component includes three additional performance indicators —the Chronic Absenteeism Improvement Indicator, End-of-Course Improvement Indicator, and Gifted Indicator.

Gap closing looks at several data points to assess whether student subgroups based on race, ability, and economic status are meeting state standards. The average gap closing rating for districts across the state is 4.14 stars.

The Early literacy rating comes from information from third-grade reading tests, fourth-grade promotions, and literacy improvement from kindergarten to third grade. The average early literacy rating for districts across the state is 2.88 stars.

Lastly, another component of the report card is the Performance Index (PI). The performance index represents whether student performance on state tests met established thresholds and how well students performed on tests overall, according to the Ohio Department of Education. This is based on state tests for third grade through high school.

The 2021-2022 scores among all districts in the state ranged from 43.3 to 110.1. This year's Kings District PI score is 97.7. The PI score increased from last year's score of 92.2. This score places Kings #77 out of 607 districts in Ohio. The average Performance Index in Ohio is 79.3.

Kings Operating Levy Information

The Kings Local School District has a 6.4 mill Operating Levy on the November 8, 2022 ballot.

There has been discussion about how much the district spends per student out of the operating budget.

As you see in the chart below, in the 2021-2022 school year, Kings spent $10,792 to educate each student. The state average is $11,246 per student. However, Kings only receives $2,228 per pupil in state funding, requiring the District to ask local taxpayers to help fund our schools.

We compared our spending to our neighboring districts and the number of stars each received on the latest State Report Card. Kings received 22 stars along with Indian Hill and Mason. However, Kings spends less per student than both of those districts.

Additionally, Kings offers a large number of course offerings and electives that factor into the costs. Our goal is to achieve high student success while maintaining fiscal responsibility. The results of the State report card show positive evidence that we are delivering a great educational value for our Kings Local Schools Community.

Community members are encouraged to visit our Levy FAQ page to learn more. We will continue to add questions to this page as we receive them.

If you would like to learn more about the Operating Levy, please contact Kings Treasurer Mike Morrow at mmorrow@kingslocal.net

KHS Receives College Success Award

Kings High School has won a 2022 College Success Award from GreatSchools.org. The award is given to high schools for their excellence in preparing students for college and beyond.

Now in its fifth year, the College Success Award recognizes public high schools that excel at preparing students for college and beyond. Kings High School is one of only 1,742 public high schools across the nation to win this year's Award, which is based on college preparation and postsecondary data shared by the State of Ohio.

According to the GreatSchools.org website, this award means that the students at Kings High School are making far more academic progress given where they were last year, compared to similar students in the state. High progress with high test scores means students have strong academic skills, and the school is doing an excellent job at supporting academic growth compared to most other schools.

.

KHS also earned the College Success Award in 2018, 2020, and 2021.

Congratulations to the staff and students of Kings High School for this prestigious award! #KingsStrong

KHS Architecture Class Visits Homearama

The students in Mrs. Angie Guilfoyle's Architecture class at Kings High School were gifted free admission to this year's Homearama in Loveland.

The company, Innovative Tiny Houses, out of Rapid City, Michigan, generously donated the tickets and presented their Tiny House on display to the students at this year's event. Aaron Weaver, the owner and founder, visited the KHS Architecture class on Tuesday, September 20. He discussed how he got started in building Tiny Houses, how the design process works with clients, and how their design skills can contribute to future architecture and design fields.

Mrs.Guilfoyle and Mr.Weaver hope to build a partnership where the students will be able to share their design ideas with Mr.Weaver via zoom and even get involved in some of his projects! He was able to see the Tiny Retreat projects the KHS students are currently working on in class.

Mrs. Guilfoyle said, "We are hoping to find ways to connect with Innovative Tiny Houses to give students a co-op type of experience." The future in home design involves a smaller, more sustainable footprint like what we see in tiny homes, as well as innovative "new urbanism" communities which offer alternatives to the sprawling, single-use developments that surround us." I am excited to give our students this exposure and look forward to seeing their future design contributions after they leave KHS," she said.

Digital Flyers

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.

Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!
