Four Kings High School seniors have received a Letter of Commendation from the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. The Commended Students from KHS are Nick Hoying, Kayley Knollman, Ethan Streckfuss, and Dylan Ward.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT-NMSQT).
A spokesperson from the National Merit organization said, “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.”
Nick is the son of Jody and Matthew Hoying. He plans to study Chemical Engineering and will play football at Bucknell University in the fall. He plays football and lacrosse for Kings and is involved in National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and the R.A.I.S.E. team. He also works at Chipotle. Nick’s GPA is 4.48.

Kings Operating Levy Information
The Kings Local School District has a 6.4 mill Operating Levy on the November 8, 2022 ballot.
This levy will cost the Kings taxpayer $18.67 per month for every $100,000 of true home value.
Last week we told you about how much Kings spends per pupil. This week we want to talk about how much Kings receives in State funding per student.
The District received just under $10 million dollars in 2021-2022 from the State of Ohio. With total revenues of $57,000,000, this represents only 17% of the budget for the 2021-2022 school year.
The state formula works to equalize funding and provide additional money to schools and districts that do not have the capacity and wealth to raise revenues locally. The new state and local cost methodology use both property values and income to determine the state share for each district.
Kings has above-average property values and income, so we receive less funding from the state than other districts. Kings Local School District received $2,228 per pupil in state funding based on the formula as of June 2022. This per pupil amount is only 44% of the state average.
Remember, as we told you last week, we spend $10,792 per pupil, which means that the State is only funding 17% of our budget. Because of the level of support from the State is so low, school districts have to ask the community and taxpayers to fund our schools.
Community members are encouraged to visit our Levy FAQ page to learn more. We will continue to add questions to this page as we receive them.
If you would like to learn more about the Operating Levy, please contact Kings Treasurer Mike Morrow at mmorrow@kingslocal.net.

Dear Parents,
For the past two years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has provided waivers to Child Nutrition Programs across the United States, allowing these programs to offer all students breakfast and lunch meals at no charge, regardless of income status. This waiver has expired. To be eligible for meal assistance, families must complete an application.
Also, for families that had an application on file for the 2021-2022 school year, this application expired on Monday, September 26th. A new application must be submitted every school year. If families have not reapplied, they must complete an application as soon as possible to restore this service for free or reduced meals.
We encourage all families to complete a Free/Reduced Meal Application so the student’s eligibility can be evaluated based on the program guidelines. If applications are needed in an alternative language, this can be provided, please contact your child's school. Students will be charged full price for meals until a Free/Reduced Meal is processed and the eligibility status of the student is determined.
Please click on this link below to complete your application today!
Kings Local School Food Service Department is committed to assisting our students and families. Please contact Jennifer S. Arlinghaus, R.D., L.D., Food Service Director at (513) 398-8050, ext. 10027 if you have any questions.

KHS Students Learn More About the Military
Following on the heels of Military Appreciation events, Kings High School hosted all branches of the U.S. military on Tuesday, September 27.
Twenty-five students had the opportunity to listen to a classroom presentation and have casual conversations with the military representatives to get their questions answered.
Did you know the U.S. military offers both part and full-time service, along with opportunities for immediate and long-term college tuition? Did you know the U.S. military offers essentially "free" certifications for trade school-type career paths?
Only about 10% of military jobs are combat related, so students were able to hear about possibilities to follow fields of study such as Information Technology, Cyber Security, Electrical Maintenance, Construction, Fire, Medic, Business, and more. Students will have the opportunity to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test on November 18, 2022. This aptitude test provides access to one of the best career exploration surveys available for both civilian and military career coaching.
Thank you to Mrs. Debby Henderson for organizing a great day for our students.

We've also added a ship-to-home option, so you won't even have to worry about forgetting to pick it up. These make great holiday gifts!
We now also have a QR code to make ordering even easier.

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.
Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!
| |
The District is in great need of substitute teachers and nurses, childcare aides, paraprofessionals, food service workers, and bus drivers.
Kings Kids Before and After School Childcare is still hiring! Wages start at $14 an hour! Click here for the payscale.
