Kings is Back on the Ballot
|
|
The Kings Board of Education voted to place a 4.7 mill bond issue on the March 17, 2020 ballot.
Kings Board of Education President, Peggy Phillips said that the Board received many emails and opinions regarding the outcome of the November election where Kings bond issue failed by 146 votes. She said,"We believe this plan is fiscally responsible and it will ensure that our students will have a safe environment in which to learn."
The bond will fund $89,975,000 of construction and renovations in the District. Phillips noted that "the need hasn't changed. Four out of six buildings have no classroom space left. The other two buildings are getting close to capacity, as well." Current enrollment in the District is 4,650. Enrollment projections show that the District will grow another 500-600 students by 2024.

Peer Tutoring Program at KHS
|
|
Starting next week, a new peer-tutoring program will take place at Kings High School. KHS teachers, Katlyn Bare, Katelin Sondles, and KHS Counselor, Erika Volker utilized their Fall in-service day to visit neighboring schools to learn from those who are currently utilizing the program.
A survey was sent out to the student body where over 500 students particpated, indicating clear evidence for academic help for students. They found that 70% of KHS students responded that they would feel comfortable getting help from a peer. Additionally, the survey results noted that
students having jobs, extracurricular activities, lack of transportation, and other commitments before and after school creates a a stronger need to have opportunities for academic help during the day.
Ms. Bare said, "
Our student voices have been the drive to create a Peer-Tutoring Program to help foster academic grit, resiliency, and pride in his/her/their education. The goal of these tutoring sessions is to help our students become more skilled and confident learners in academic areas as well as in lifelong learning."
KHS National Honor Society students were recently trained and the Peer-Tutoring Center will officially open on Monday, January 27 in the KHS Bradford Learning Commons.

The Kings Local School District will be well represented at the upcoming Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference held in downtown Cincinnati January 29 - February 1 at the Duke Energy Convention Center and downtown Hyatt Regency.
The Kings High School Symphonic Band was 1 of the 5 bands chosen to perform out of 135 recorded auditions! Band Director, Brian McDonough said, "It is a huge honor to be invited and perform at this event!"
They will be performing a FREE concert on Thursday, January 30 at 3:30 p.m.
Additionally, ten students under the direction of Kings Music Teachers, Carolyn Dillon and Matt Jenkins auditioned for, and were accepted into the All State Children's Chorus. Mrs. Dillon and Mr. Jenkins have been leading rehearsals for the 25 All State Children's Chorus students selected from the Southwest Region of the state.
The entire All State Children's Chorus will gather at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Cincinnati on Thursday, January 30 for an all day rehearsal with guest conductor Roger Sams, followed by a concert at 5:00 p.m. accompanied on piano by Mr. Jenkins.

Workforce Development with Senator Portman
|
|
On Friday, January 17, Superintendent Tim Ackermann participated in a workforce development roundtable discussion with U.S. Senator, Rob Portman. The event was coordinated by United Way of Warren County at FECON, a business partner in the joint UWWC/Kings workforce program.
Aaron Reid, CEO of our local United Way and also Warren County Community Services said
,
“One of the reasons Senator Portman’s team asked us to coordinate this event is because of the success Kings has had with innovative new programs focused on the jobs of the future that pay very well and don’t require going to college.”
2019 Kings High School graduate, Zach Layman, a program participant now in an apprenticeship program with FECON, was spotlighted at the roundtable. Said Portman, “I enjoyed my visit with members from the United Way Warren County along with their local partners. We had a productive discussion about how best to ensure Ohioans get the skills training they need to succeed in the jobs available today.”

The Kings Community Art Nights are an opportunity for adults, young children and families to come and enjoy a free activity involving the arts.
During this free art night we will be celebrating Valentine's Day by creating tissue paper luminaries that you can keep or give as a gift. There will also, be a group project that you can be a part of!
This Free Art Night will give you the opportunity to make something for yourself, but also make something for someone else.

Community Suicide Prevention Training
|
|
Later this month, Kings invites our community to learn how to recognize and intervene with someone who may be having thoughts of suicide through Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) process.
This training will be lead by staff from Solutions Community Counseling and Recovery Centers. All are welcome to participate, though the content may not be appropriate for younger students.
Join us on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, from 6:30-8:00 p.m in the Kings Junior High Multipurpose Room.

Kings Preschool Registration for 2020-2021

Registration for Kings Preschool are now being accepted. The preschool/childcare program meets in the Kings Education Center (KEC).
Kings Preschool offers both preschool and childcare for 3-5 year olds. All programs are licensed by the Ohio Department of Education.

Join Kings Bands as they host this year's Pat Cope Memorial BANDcakes Breakfast. It will be held at Kings High School on Saturday, March 14 from 7:30 a.m.-noon.
All you can eat pancakes are on the menu and you can also enjoy performances by various Kings Bands and music ensembles.
Cost is $8.00 per person. Children ages 5 and under are FREE!
Also that day, the Kings Band Boosters will be collecting used instruments for this year's Instrument Drive. Sponsored by Kaylyn's Hope Chest, a non-profit organization in memory of former Kings Band Student, Kaylyn Daumeyer, honors her memory by making instruments available to members of the community who cannot afford an instrument. The collected instruments are serviced and loaned to students who would like to join any of the Kings band programs.
