The Outsiders Project at KJH

The 7th grade students at Kings Junior High School recently read
The Outsiders
by S.E. Hinton. As an extension to the novel, and in an effort to enhance and embrace the growing diversity of our district, KJH 7th grade students completed an an assignment called
The Single Story Project
.
One of the main themes of the novel is best learned when the protagonist, Ponyboy Curtis, says, “Someone should tell their side of the story, and maybe people would understand then and wouldn’t be so quick to judge a boy by the amount of hair oil he wore.”
KJH 7th grade ELA teacher, Brook Warner challenged her students to create a list of people from our school/community who they felt needed to be better understood (like the Greasers) and whose full story needed to be told. They then invited those who represent each of the groups to share their story.
On Friday, December 6, fellow students of Kings Junior High and members of our community visited KJH and shared their story with the 7th graders through guided interview questions. Warner said, "Watching these students interact with such respect and compassion is what makes this project so special."

Kings Preschool Gingerbread Night
|
|
Kings Preschool students and their families participated in a very special evening event on Thursday, December 12. With over 400 in attendance, students and their families celebrated the holiday season by creating over 115 mini gingerbread houses.
Holiday music filled the air, while candy and great company was enjoyed by all!

“Legacy: inspiring love to be passed down through generations”.... Those are the words of Dana Gendreau, Kings parent who started a movement to feed the football team at Cincinnati's Hughes High School.
What originally started off as preparing and serving meals to football players in need has now grown into an all out push to create a new narrative; not only between 2 schools, but the community as a whole. Gendreau saw not only the initial need, but also the need of ongoing support.
Noticing that there was no support for the players at the games on Friday night, she began to rally her son’s 5th grade football team parents, and other members of the community to the games. In turn, the Hughes High team began to attend the Kings 5th grade games.
As a part of this movement, a special hoodie has been designed. It contains both the Kings and Hughes logo's on the sleeves. The clothing designer has a son who graduated from Kings 2 years ago but also had his own brother shot and killed downtown right by Hughes High School. Gendreau said, "This embodies our mission to step up as a Kings community and build into our kids here AND at Hughes."

KJH PLTW Engineering Trip

Kings Junior High School Project Lead the Way classes met with Kings Island’s engineering team on November 25. The students visited the park and learned how many types of engineering fields come together to make the park function;
Geo technical
, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering.
The students received a VIP tour of maintenance garages and the construction of the newest rollercoaster, Orion. They had the whole park to themselves and also took a tour through the Kings High School's Engineering project that is showcased at Winterfest.

JFB Raises Money for Pennies for Patients

Congratulations to J.F. Burns Elementary for their successful Pennies for Patients campaign to support the
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
. The school raised $5256.80!
This year's campaign is close to our hearts. This initiative seeks to accelerate treatments with few harmful side effects to help children like Kings 6th grader, Gracie Tapp. Gracie is this year's Honored Hero for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She was originally diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2012 and relapsed in 2018. We are happy to report that she is now in remission!
Pennies for Patients is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s longest standing school and youth fundraising campaign. Pennies for Patients is a service learning program with a scientific base with the purpose of providing tangible life skills for its participants and allow students to see the difference they are making in the lives of others.Elementary and middle schools partnering with Pennies for Patients receive an experiential K-8 STEM+ curriculum which includes ready-to-use materials and social & emotional learning (SEL) activities. All of the Kings school buildings will be participating the fundraiser this year.

A cheer coach out in Los Angeles, California recently made a post on Facebook asking if anyone had poms that they didn't need and could possibly donate to them. Luckily Kings Cheerleading coach, Kat Treleven was paying attention.
Kat contacted KHS cheer coach, Madge Schrenk to see if she could purchase all of the cheer program's old poms to send to the Math and Science College Prep High School cheer program. Madge told Kat that they would just donate them from the program to help them out.
"Once contacted, the coach told us that they had no uniforms at all," said Schrenk. When told that the California team's school colors are white with red and black and a little blue, the Kings coaches knew how they could help.
The cheerleading program had some old red warm-ups that were probably over 15 years old that they had been selling at the football games this year. They boxed up all of the old uniforms and sent them off to L.A. It was a win-win for the cheer program; they cleaned out their storage and were able to help those in need!

Kings Preschool Registration for 2020-2021
|
|
It's that time of year again to begin registration for Kings Preschool! Registrations will be accepted beginning January 21. The preschool/childcare program meets in the Kings Education Center (KEC).
Kings Preschool offers both preschool and childcare for 3-5 year olds. All programs are licensed by the Ohio Department of Education.
