Great First Week of School!
It was a great start to the school year! Our staggered start was a success as it allowed our students and teachers form relationships in a smaller classroom setting.

Watch the video below for some scenes from the first days of school.

COVID-19 Dashboard
Kings is committed to track and share positive cases and quarantines of COVID-19 among our students and staff. We will update the COVID-19 dashboard weekly by 5:00 p.m. each Friday.

Please continue to perform a daily health assessment on your student before coming to school. You can utilize this Decision Tree to help decide if you should send your child to school.

Below is this week's data.
MindPeace Rooms Installed in Our Schools
An update from Kings Social-Emotional Health Coordinator, Kim Sellers.

We are beyond excited about three new MindPeace Rooms™ in the Kings District, made possible by a generous donation from MindPeace Cincinnati!

A MindPeace Room™ promotes de-escalation and is supervised by school staff. MindPeace Rooms™ differ from “Calming Rooms,” “Sensory Space” or “Comfort Areas” which are spaces used to de-escalate students.

Staff members using the rooms are trained by MindPeace on the MindPeace Room™ Process. This not only contributes to the student’s de-escalation but also teaches students self-regulation and resiliency skills. A MindPeace Room is a safe space and helps adults build trusted relationships with students in the school setting.

This year, we have added a MindPeace Room™ to Columbia Intermediate, Kings Mills Elementary, and J.F. Burns Elementary. A huge thank you to Elane Carnevele, MindPeace Program Manager for setting up our rooms and training staff! She was recently featured on the 1N5 of Us Podcast. She spoke about how a MindPeace Room™ is utilized, what they teach students, and what the outcomes have been. You can listen to it here: Ep. 7 - MindPeace Rooms.
Kings Staff Help with Reading Remediation
Our Community Partner, Joshua’s Place has been supporting the Kings Local School District for many years.

This summer, they hosted a Reading Recovery Program that provided reading remediation for Kings students.

South Lebanon Elementary third grade teacher, Amanda Wey first approached Joshua’s Place Program Director, Susan Simendinger with the idea of the summer reading program. Due to the pandemic, many students are behind in reading their reading skills.

SLE Reading Specialist, Michelle Oakes trained Joshua’s Place volunteers in the school’s phonics flashcard program. Then, identified students participated in the reading recovery program for two days a week for one-on-one tutoring.

Additionally, SLE teachers participated weekly by reading to students and doing a STEM activity with the students.

Thank you to Joshua’s Place, Kevin Peyton, Nona Peyton, Susan Simendinger, and SLE teachers, Amanda Wey, Michelle Oakes, Jennifer Westley, Rachel Manely, Brooke Blount, Susie Burdine, Eva Garchar, Kristen McCarren, Jamie Fox, and Andrea Cost.

Parent/Student Reunification Protocol
If you haven't completed the form for student/parent reunification in case of an emergency, there is still time.

In the event of an emergency where an evacuation of the school building is necessary, we have identified off-site locations (reunification sites) to transport students to safety.

Board of Education Meets Next Week
The Kings Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, August 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the Kings Education Center, Conference Room 2.

The purpose of the meeting is to evaluate COVID protocols, Face Coverings, and Masking (Possible action).

FREE Meals for ALL Students During 2021-2022 School Year
We are pleased to announce that the United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) has extended the FREE Meal benefits for all students for the 2021-2022 school year. This program was designed to lend relief as we transitioned from the COVID pandemic.

This year EVERY student will receive one free breakfast meal and one free lunch meal throughout the entire 2021-2022 school year.

Although we are provided the Free Meal Benefit for the 2021-2022 school year, families are still encouraged to complete the Free and Reduced Meal Application. This program provides eligibility for other services that may help your student, programs like P-EBT food assistance, discounts for school fees among others.
