Kings Participating in Quarantine Pilot
|
|
An email was sent home to parents and guardians today outlining the Ohio Test & Stay Quarantine Pilot Program that will begin next week in the Kings Local School District.
The program's goal is to keep Pre-K-12 students in school, in-person five days a week. We believe that in-person learning is very important for children’s development.
Students who are considered a direct contact due to exposure to COVID-19 while at school will have an opportunity to enter the testing pilot and avoid a 10-day quarantine from school.
There are stringent requirements for the pilot that are outlined on our website.
Kings Superintendent, Greg Sears shares details about the program below.

Summer Reading Recovery Program a Success!
|
|
Our Community Partner, Joshua’s Place has been supporting the Kings Local School District for many years.
This summer, they hosted a Reading Recovery Program that provided reading remediation for Kings students.
South Lebanon Elementary teacher, Amanda Wey first approached Joshua’s Place Program Director, Susan Simendinger with the idea of the summer reading program. Due to the pandemic, many students are behind in reading.
SLE Reading Specialist, Michelle Oakes trained Joshua’s Place volunteers in the school’s phonics flashcard program. Then, identified students participated in the reading recovery program for two days a week for one-on-one tutoring.
Additionally, SLE teachers participated weekly by reading to students and doing a STEM activity with the students.
Recent progress testing at school found that all of the kids that participated in the Reading Recovery program did very well in testing. While there was a concern of regression due to COVID-19, none of them regressed and most of them were up 1 to 2 reading levels. In fact, five of the students in the program no longer need to meet with the reading specialist!
"We can't thank you enough for your dedication and commitment to this program. The reason these students are where they are is because of you. You gave them an advantage that they wouldn't have had otherwise. Thank you again for loving these kids in such a practical way," said Simendinger.
Thank you to Joshua’s Place, Susan Simendinger, and SLE teachers, Amanda Wey, Michelle Oakes, Jennifer Westley, Rachel Manley, Brooke Blount, Susie Burdine, Eva Garchar, Kristen McCarren, Jamie Fox, and Andrea Cost.

Community Learning Series
|
|
We have added a Community Learning Series event in October!
Don't miss ENDING THE SILENCE, the next Community Learning Series on Thursday, October 28 at 6:00 p.m. Location/link TBD.
Ending the Silence is an engaging presentation about mental health for middle and high school students, parents, and school staff. Specifically, Ending the Silence for Families is a module designed for parents and caregivers of young students. In presentations, a lead presenter shares an informative presentation and a young adult with a mental health condition shares their journey of recovery.
The presentation gives an opportunity for audience members to ask questions and learn more about an often-misunderstood topic. The message of empathy and hope encourages people to actively care for themselves and for their peers, whether by reaching out for help, encouraging a friend or family member to seek help or by reducing stigma.
The goal of NAMI ETS is to create a generation of individuals who are well-positioned to end the silence and stigma surrounding mental illness.
Topics include:
- Signs and symptoms of mental illness and suicide
- Statistics on how mental illness affects youth
- Personal perspectives on the experience of living with mental illness
- Recovery and coping strategies and resources available
- Ways to seek help for themselves, a child or for a friend
- Ways to help reduce the stigma associated with mental illness
