THE CORNERSTONE
February 26, 2023
First Sunday of Lent
Dear Friends in Christ,

I love the above quote from Saint John Paul II. I often wonder why people are afraid to go to confession and who feel worried and embarrassed to confess their sins. Then, I think that for many years before I was a priest, I felt the exact same way. I felt shame and guilt. I was embarrassed to confess to a priest I knew or thought would know me by my voice. And then even more excuses came to stay away.

As a priest, I have learned that these are all deceptions of the enemy who wants to keep us away from God’s abundant love and mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. And so he uses these little “suggestions” of worry, shame, and embarrassment to convince us it’s no use; so “stay away or you will be made a fool.”

Well, don’t fall for those deceptions. As a priest for over 20 years, I have never looked upon someone confessing sins (and I have heard all kinds of sins!) in a derogatory or shameful way. Quite the opposite, in fact. I think I speak for all priests that we are delighted and overjoyed when people come to the sacrament and confess their sins, no matter what those sins are. Why? Because we know that God’s mercy is greater and more powerful than the consequences of any sin. All priests take to heart the words of Jesus in Saint Luke’s Gospel:

“I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who have no need of repentance.” —Luke 15:7

And again,
I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” —Luke 15:10

So, as Saint John Paul II encourages us, be honest with ourselves and have the courage to entrust ourselves to the mercy of a loving and forgiving God this Lent. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated every Saturday at 3:30 at both parishes. There will also be an opportunity for confessions during the First Friday Holy Hour at Holy Cross beginning at 6:00 pm on March 3. In addition, there will be a Lenten Reconciliation Service at Saint Patrick on Thursday, March 16, at 6:30 pm, with three priests available to hear your confessions. I invite you to take the time and “schedule” an appointment with the Lord Jesus for confession this Lent. It will change your Lent and your life!

Blessings for the week ahead,

Fr. David Mulholland
Pastor
THIS WEEK
Catholic Home Missions
The Catholic Home Missions special collection is this weekend, February 25-26.

Over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the
essential pastoral work needed in their communities. These dioceses face challenges due to priest shortages, lack of funds, remote geography, or impoverished parishes.

Through annual grants, the Catholic Home Mission Collection funds catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, Hispanic ministry and other pastoral programs. As a result of parishioners’ generosity, Catholic Home Missions impacts the lives of nearly nine million Catholics in the United States.

Make your generous gift using the parish Online Giving links below or drop your special collections envelope in the offertory basket at Mass.

FAITH FORMATION
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Catechist Formation
From February 16 to 19, Saint Patrick Catholic Church was the host site for a level lll Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Formation Course.

The four days were part of the 100-hour training that will continue throughout 2023. Nineteen individuals attended. Our Formation Leaders were Joann Terranova from Olympia, Washington, and Autumn Domingue from Texas. This training enables participants to be more equipped to serve children ages 9-12.

Known as The Sheepfold, the organization conducts ongoing training for individuals seeking to become a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd catechist. The Pacific Northwest Consortium of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Formation comprises 17 local faith communities.

If we want to help the child grow near to God, we should, with patience and courage…seek to go always closer to the vital nucleus of things. This requires study and prayer. The child himself will be our teacher. If we know how to observe him”.
—Sofia Cavalletti

The Catechesis of a Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based approach to faith formation where children ages 3-12 are formed using a hands-on approach in the Catholic faith in a sacred space called the ‘atrium.

To learn more about CGS at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, visit the atrium, serve or train as a catechist, email Kim Ward, CGS Coordinator, or call 253-274-4108.

Also, visit the national CGS Association website and the local consortium website, The Sheepfold, to learn more and watch a video for a glimpse into atrium life.
