Mas de Boislauzon Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2019

"As I've grown older, I've developed an appreciation for wines that are immediately gratifying, but that can also provide great satisfaction over several years. I can no longer buy a young Bordeaux and wait 20 to 25 years for all the elements to come into perfect harmony. Today, the wine that I find myself turning to most often is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its wide array of aromas and flavors are reminiscent of a Provençal marketplace while its texture — rich and round, sumptuous and opulent — is virtually unmatched by most of the wines of the world." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

Like many of you out there, I love Chateaunuef-du-Pape wine. Easy to remember, the 'new house of the Pope,' and easy to pronounce, even the novice wine drinker can hang their hat on this wine. Of the 19 varietal grapes grown here, the GSM blend (Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre) wines have been made famous by Cheaunuef-du-Pape and are widely emulated worldwide. The Chateaunuef-du-Pape region has always been known as an area for great wine, partly due to its alluvial soils, strong winds off the ocean, and abundant sunshine. This area is steeped in history, not only because it was the papal vacation home but also was the spot where Appellations Laws for quality wine in all of France, and used as the model for the rest of the world, were founded in 1936. In fact, the CDP appellation is the largest in the Rhone, some 8,000 acres, and only produces two wines, a red and a white.

Mas de Boislauzon is a 6th generation wine-making estate located north of the appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape just outside of the town of Orange at the place called Boislauzon. Today, the operation is run by sister and brother Christine Laget and Daniel Chaussy. Christine is on the operation side, while Daniel oversees the winemaking. The family tradition continues with their four children joining the winery.

The family estate covers 75 acres of vines, 25 of those acres are in Chateauneuf du Pape, in highly rated areas known as Boislauzon, Cabrière, La Gardiole, Brusquières, Pialon, and Palestor. They also own 50 acres just over the border in Cotes du Rhone appellation within 3 miles around the estate. The 2 oaks image that appears on all Mas de Boislauzon packaging is a sketch of the 2 oaks trees on the property that mark the actual border limits of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône Villages appellations. The estate has been certified organic since 2012, and in practice, they are largely biodynamic. They believe that the cultivation is done in perfect harmony with the vine, the land, and the climate. Mas de Boislauzon today is a stunning example of what Chateauneuf du Pape does best. And the critics love them, with 90+ ratings.

Winemaker Notes

The holdings are spread across 12 parcels in varying soils including sand, clay-limestone, and galets roulés. There is a lot of sand in Pignan, Boislauzon has more pebbles, while Brusquières and Palestor have a lot of clay.

The grapes are 0% destemmed, vinified in concrete, and aged in concrete tank and barrique for 12 months before bottling.

Blend: 70% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre

Critical Acclaim

Reveals raspberry and red cherry flavors underscored by licorice, charred herbs, earth and smoke. Builds in mineral intensity, with graphite and singed apple wood cruising through the finish, with snappy acidity holding sway. Well-structured and drinking beautifully now. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Wine Spectator 94 pts

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is fabulous stuff, offering a round, full-bodied, opulent style as well as classic notes of black raspberries, cherries, new saddle leather, and Provençal garrigue. It's already impossible to resist yet will keep for 15 years in cold cellars. The cuvée is 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre, brought up all in concrete tank. Jeb Dunnuck 93 pts

Inviting nose of succulent dark fruits, stewed damsons, garrigues and meaty notes. Dense and full-bodied, fleshy with a spicy and savoury finish. Decanter 93 pts

A tank-aged blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape shows a gentle garrigue influence and a hint of mint on the nose, alongside super-ripe black cherries and blackberries. It's full-bodied and rich but silky, then turns tougher and more tannic on the finish. Give it a couple of years to smooth out. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92 pts

The nice depth of color opens to black raspberries, plums, spicy kirsch herbs on the nose. Spicy, meaty and a bit chewy with elements of grilled beef, spice and peppery, herbal red fruits, the endnote comes along with a nice taste of green olives. This remains one of the best bargains in Chateauneuf du Pape for character and quality today. Drink from 2023 – 2035 The Wine Insider 92 pts

Fine Wine Offer

Mas de Boislauzon Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2019

We first tasted this wine many months ago, with the rest of the Mas de Boislauzon wines. Although the reserve wines at 3 times the price were great, we kept returning to this one. The next day, the half-empty bottle (or half-full) was left from the tasting, and it proved amazing after being open for over 24 hours. So we bought all that our distributor had. We recently tried it again, it was among a flight of 17 other French wines, and again, this wine stood out as the clear favorite. So much so that the staff started placing orders because they knew how fast the wine would sell. It is a dark, opaque color with compact aromas of violets and wild cherries. On the palate, the wine-crowd adjectives offered were raspberry balsamic, fresh fig, chocolate-covered cherries, red licorice, and gazpacho. It is full-bodied with silky tannins, good acids, and a very long, bitter cherry finish. As we talked, swirled, and emptied the bottle, flavors kept evolving: sweet red bean, tea, herbal components, mocha, and we kept finding more. Someone said it was like a flannel shirt with a sherpa lining. I am not sure what that means, but I know I will be buying some as will much of our staff; it was that good. Get it while you can because there is no more to be had of this small, highly acclaimed wine.

A Quick Word On Ordering

Orders must be done by replying to this email. The reason is that I need to keep control of the inventory in one central spot. Emailing or calling your favorite wine geek at one of our four stores may not get your orders in on time to be counted or processed and this creates a helter-skelter for us to get you the wine. For the same reason, ordering on our online Web Store is linked to our regular price, and this sale price is only offered on the email platform. It is also why it takes me some time to respond due to the deluge of orders that I sometimes get. We haven't reached the efficiency or volume of Amazon yet. Thank you in advance for your patience.

How To Place Your Order

Let me know your preferred store for pickup: Attleboro, Norwood, Sturbridge, or Swansea. If you don't state the store, I will assume you are picking up in Sturbridge.
