Mediation Update
The bargaining committee met with the university's team and a mediator from 2pm to 5pm Thursday and 9am to 5pm today.
Yesterday, the bargaining committee proposed discussing and trying to reach agreements on several smaller articles before moving on to discussing our core areas of disagreement: healthcare, compensation, job security, and recourse against harassment and discrimination.
The university's team refused to respond to any proposals on the smaller issues until it had received proposals from the bargaining committee on all outstanding issues.
Around midday today, the bargaining committee, via the mediator, presented a full package of "supposals" to the university.
This package included major movement on our economic proposals and significant movement on many other proposals.
The bargaining committee is committed to making the compromises necessary to reaching a fair deal that works for part-time faculty and the University.
The bargaining committee was willing to meet with the university all-day Saturday and Sunday to reach a deal that would have faculty back in classrooms by Monday.
The university indicated that it needed more time to prepare and to consult a third-party related to health insurance before responding to the bargaining committee's supposals.
The university offered to meet 2pm - 6pm Sunday and from 12pm onwards on Monday, times to which the bargaining committee agreed.
The bargaining committee is disappointed that part-time faculty will not be able to return to classrooms by Monday. The committee remains committed to negotiations and will give the university's team the time that they need.
