One of my favorite parts of doing this monthly e-newsletter for FREA is doing all the research and sharing the knowledge that I gain. It is far easier to do these days, but is using the internet a better way? The internet is something that we have all gotten used to using for instant information. Growing up, information was something to be worked for. As a child, if I went to my parents with a question, the answer was always, why don't you go look it up in the encyclopedia or the dictionary? The encyclopedias in our house were the Encyclopedia Brittanica 1959 edition, and there were about 20 of them. Selling those encylopedias door-to-door were one way my Dad supported his family of 9 while going to college for his Master's in Psychology. Each volume weighed what felt like (to a 25 pound 6 year-old), a ton. So into the living room I would go to drag out the encyclopedia I needed and look up the answer to my question. While looking I usually got lost in the reading and to this day am a fount of obscure and someitimes outdated knowledge. The dictionary? The dictionary was a 1940's Webster Unabridged that had it's own place of honor on a big oak stand that I would have to drag a footstool up to in order to turn the tissue paper pages to find the definition I wanted, for the new word I found, in the book I was reading. The Living Healthy and Wealthy article is a compilation of about 6 days of research the old fashioned way.
