The Hundred-Year Barn
By Patricia MacLachlan, Kenard Pak (Illustrator)

Exquisite illustrations by Kenard Pak bring to life this story of a barn built one hundred years ago in August, 1919 on the North Dakota Prairie. Written by celebrated author Patricia MacLachlan, readers follow the story through the eyes of a five-year-old boy. It speaks of community, hard work made light by many hands, celebration that the barn is built, gratitude for those who came together to build a barn for just one family. The years pass and the barn serves many purposes through the years, not only as a place to shelter animals, but also as a community gathering place. This is a beautiful, sweet story about legacy, putting down roots, and tending to the things that matter to us.  — Susan (RBB Staff)
All the Impossible Things
By Lindsay Lackey

Red is waiting for her mom to get out of prison so they can be together again, but in the meantime, she's found a new home with the Grooves, who run a petting zoo. As she faces the realities of her mother's situation, Red must also figure out how to control her wind powers, which respond to her emotions. Beautiful story of love and family and the deep things that connect us to one another. — Joan (RBB Staff)
The Liar's Daughter
By Megan Cooley Peterson

I think the less we talk about this the better. I loved not knowing what was really going on. As Piper goes along learning more about herself, so do we. Growing up in a doomsday cult has Piper preparing for the end of the world. She holds her father in such esteem, he can do no wrong. Unfortunately, as always happens, things go terribly wrong—he is not the man she thought he was. But Piper has been so brainwashed, it takes a long time for her to realize what is really going on. I think both young adults and adults would enjoy this story.   — Julie (RBB Staff)
Suicide Woods
By Benjamin Percy

This creepy, atmospheric collection of short stories is the perfect seasonal read for the dark days of November. Each story is different from the next, the thrills coming one after the other in different horrifying forms. The writing is sharp and clear and there's just enough hope for humanity running through it we wanted to include it in our newsletter. — Angela (RBB Staff)
