Title: Assessing the Success of a Calcium Peroxide-Based Product and its Effect on Sediment Reduction and Water Parameters in Multiple Small Waterbodies

Abstract Summary: Excess nutrients entering waterbodies can fuel algal blooms and through algal senescence can increase the organic matter content in a waterbody which can lead to elevated sediment accumulation. The breakdown of high organic matter content in the sediment by respiring bacteria can cause oxygen depletion which can ultimately lead to largescale fish mortality. To tackle organic matter accumulation in waterbodies, we introduce a calcium peroxide-based product to reduce sediment depths in treated waterbodies as an alternative to dredging.

Meet Dr. Kate Waters-Hart, Oase's Global Limnologist

Kate worked in a lake industry setting over the past 6 years and currently resides in Scotland, U.K. Kate researched and previously worked with lanthanum-modified bentonite and is experienced in different lake restoration techniques, particularly phosphorus mitigation measures. Her main work areas focus on the causes, effects and restoration of eutrophication impacts in lakes. More specifically, assessing water quality and sediment quality, aquatic macrophyte communities, phytoplankton communities and stress responses in aquatic plants.

Kate completed her PhD research in 2020 which investigated the recovery of aquatic plants following lanthanum-modified bentonite applications based at the U.K. Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and the University of Stirling, Scotland. Kate undertook her MSc at the University of East Anglia in Applied Ecology & Conservation in England.

Dr. Kate as an invaluable resource for the Oase team and we are so excited for her to present at next week's NALMS Symposium in Lake Tahoe!
