Holy Cross | Saint Patrick | Saint John Vianney
Tacoma–Vashon Parish Family
One Parish Planning Process
Dear Friends in Christ,
It’s almost been one year since the Partners in the Gospel process placed our three church communities into Parish Family #36, which we call, for now, the Tacoma–Vashon Parish Family. As you know, Holy Cross and Saint Patrick have shared clergy, ministries, and resources for the past seven years now. But the addition of Saint John Vianney on Vashon Island has added new clergy and faithful to our North Tacoma Catholic community. Although this is all a bit of a challenge and does involve new ways of thinking and doing things, I feel this past year has gone fairly well. I am grateful for Fr. David Mayovsky’s ministry and willingness to assist in North Tacoma and with the school. I am also happy to have met many wonderful parishioners from Vashon Island who are faithful and enthusiastic about their church. There has also been a fair amount of crossover of parishioners attending Masses and other events at the different churches. That is a good sign, and it will be encouraged to grow, as our three churches will become one parish under canon law in July of 2027.
Between now and then, our community will be entering into a multi-year planning process that will help us see how our three unique church communities can come together as one to share clergy, ministry, resources, and grow our congregations and spread the Gospel. In some sense, this is already happening here and across our region and the country. We had 32 baptisms at the Easter Vigil this year in North Tacoma, with others coming into the faith on Vashon as well. The next group of inquirers into the faith is forming and is already in the double digits! So, we need to be ready to welcome new Catholics into the faith. There is a great desire by many to come into the Church and a hunger for faith in Christ. So our planning process can’t just be about our present church programs and structure, but how we will be able to welcome others to our Catholic faith.
The planning process we are undertaking will involve the sharing of a good deal of information with you about our church communities; essentially all the data that we maintain about ministry, finances, and resources. We will then formulate surveys and hold information/listening sessions over the next two years, addressing questions under two broad categories: First, who are we as a particular church community? And second, who do we want to become? From all of this information and input, a One Parish Plan will be circulated for your review, input, and revision, which will ultimately be sent to the Archbishop for approval.
The planning process will be guided by a Parish Family Leadership Team, comprised of church staff, who will support the planning work that will be done by the Parish Family Advisory Council. This newly formed council met for the first time this past Wednesday to begin the planning process. This council takes the place of our Joint Pastoral Council at Holy Cross–Saint Patrick and the Saint John Vianney Pastoral Council. When our One Parish Plan is approved, we will then enter into the implementation stage. At that point, a new Parish Council will be appointed with members from all three church communities and the school, to guide our new Parish Family: One Parish, with a new name, made up of three distinct church communities. The church buildings will all retain their dedicated names. This has worked well in many places. A priest friend I know from Maine was pastor in a similar situation where one new parish was created, The Parish of the Resurrection, made up of three existing churches, including a campus ministry. That will essentially be the model envisioned by Partners in the Gospel.
Fr. David and I spent a considerable amount of time in prayer and discernment on who should be invited to serve on the Parish Family Advisory Council. Accompanying this letter are the names of the folks who are generously giving of their time and talent to serve in this important planning role. They come from all three communities, are people of faith and prayer, and they understand the need to make this process a good and fruitful one for our new parish. Their pictures will soon be on a poster so you can know them by face and engage them with questions or ideas.
Our next step will be to share the data of “who we are” as individual church communities. Thereafter, there will be a survey and then the scheduling of information/listening sessions, most likely in the fall. Until then, many thanks for your prayers as we move forward.
In Christ the Lord,
Fr. David Mulholland

We're Cleaning Up!
Beginning this week, the Saint Patrick Church roof and building are getting cleaned to mitigate the buildup of moss and other harmful materials as we anticipate the return of our Rose Window. See next week's Pastor Letter for more on summer projects across our three churches.

This year's Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) theme is Together in Faith, which is fitting as we remember that the work we do as Catholics and as a community of all the baptized is not done alone.
The ACA supports priests like Father Kyle Rink. After he was ordained last year, Fr. Rink celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Patrick Church, where his parents were married, and his great-uncle, Fr. George O. Rink, who passed away in 2022, baptized him. He is the grandson of long-time parishioners Gerald "Doc" Rink, who passed away in 2011, and Patricia "Pat" Rink, who passed away in 2021. Many of Kyle's aunts and uncles are Saint Patrick Catholic School alumni.
Saint Patrick Church celebrates several vocations to the priesthood in addition to Fr. Rink, including Fr. Nicolas Rapcock, Fr. Matt Fish, and, of course, Fr. David Mulholland, along with four alumni of Saint Patrick Catholic School: Fr. Pete Henriot SJ '50, Fr. John Fuchs SJ '56, Fr. John Endres SJ '60, Fr. Perry Petrich SJ '99, and Fr. Alfred L. Morisette SJ '44.
Each parishioner's support is crucial to our parish and the mission of the Church in Western Washington! All gifts and prayers make a difference.
The average gift to the ACA was $545 last year. Check if your employer offers a matching gift program—your gift could be doubled or tripled! All gifts received over our goal will be returned to the parish. We are grateful for your generosity.

End of Fiscal Year Request
Each year, our parish community asks us to discern how we might share the abundance of blessings we have received from God through our Stewardship of Time, Talent, and Treasure. The income we receive from Stewardship of Treasure (sometimes referred to as Sacrificial Giving) is what we use as the operating budget for each parish to pay for staff, expenses to run programs, and to budget for the future. Stewardship of Treasure (Sacrificial Giving) differs from the Annual Catholic Appeal, which supports the diocesan level work of the Church of Western Washington.
As we approach the end of the fiscal year, our parishioners' Sacrificial Giving pledges are lagging behind our projected budgeted income at Saint Patrick Church by ($69,332) and Holy Cross Church by ($24,350).
We also receive many donations to our churches through the loose (cash with no envelope) and holy day collections. Because of these gifts, Saint Patrick will reach its projected budgeted income, and Holy Cross will face a lesser deficit. If you give regularly at Mass through cash or check, please consider pledging online with the parish. This is a perfect opportunity to register with the parish you attend. Your registration and Stewardship pledge (Sacrificial Giving) show a commitment to the community you worship in, help us know you're registered, and allow us to send you end-of-year tax statements. You may continue to donate via cash at Mass if you choose to do so by using parish envelopes (contact the office). Your registration and pledge card help us anticipate projected income for the next year so that we can budget appropriately.
If you have questions about Stewardship of Treasure (Sacrificial Giving) or the Annual Catholic Appeal, please call Laura Dougherty at 253-274-4109.
Please take note of the updated Box Score this week. Although Stewardship of Treasure (Sacrificial Giving) runs on a calendar year (January-December), our fiscal budget year runs from July to June.

About Kim's Legacy
Kim's journey began in 1997 with a simple question: "Will you help start a faith formation program?" A "yes" that shaped the faith journey of countless children and families.
Kim has spent these many years guiding children in the atrium, gently leading them into quiet encounters with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Through sacred stories, meaningful reflections, and a deep trust in the Holy Spirit as the true teacher, Kim created a space where children's faith and love for the Good Shepherd could grow.

On Summer Break
As we close out another wonderful year at Saint Patrick Catholic School, our hearts are full of gratitude and joy. We celebrated the accomplishments of our graduating class with the annual brunch, Mass, and graduation ceremony. We closed out the final full day of school with Field Day, a beloved tradition, and during the final four hours of school before summer break, we recognized the achievements of Shamrocks in grades 3-7 during a special assembly.
As we head into summer, we hope our families find time to rest, explore, build memories, and rejoice in all of God's blessings and continue to be the living expression of God's kindness.

Pentecost in the atrium
The children in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd celebrated Pentecost!
After a procession into the prayer corner to change the cloth color from white (Easter Season) to Red (the Feast of Pentecost), they read the account of Pentecost from Acts.
Then, each child chose a gift of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, knowledge, piety, understanding, counsel, fortitude, and fear of the Lord.
