This past Friday, STEMworks™ Live featured three industry presenters who provided a robust overview of the college admission process and how to obtain certified copies of your vital records! Thank you Ruben Yamada from Hawaii Pacific University, Chelsea Kau from the University of Portland, and Kalani Holokai from the Hawaii State Department of Health for joining us last week! We would also like to thank Joyce Rosabia, our STEMworks™ intern from Cyanotech Corporation for her overview of the LinkedIn Learning resource and how STEMworks™ interns can take advantage of such an amazing learning tool.

Setting Yourself Apart! College Admission and Common App with Ruben Yamada

What do college admissions counselors look for when you apply to their college? Ruben Yamada from Hawaii Pacific University's Admissions Office shared the top 6 factors influencing the college application process. His session also covered the Common Application and provided tips for families navigating this chapter of their lives. What is the Common Application ? It is an online college application where students can apply to over 750 colleges and universities. This allows students to easily apply to multiple schools in one platform! Ruben suggests that applicants list all their classes to the best of their ability when using the Common Application, and include all extracurricular activities. Ruben also advises students to change their email to their first and last name, or create a college email account that parents and guardians can have access to. This keeps all digital paperwork relating to college in one account! 6 Factors Influencing Application Process: GPA requirement Academic Coursework SAT or ACT scores Extracurricular Activities Essay Letters of Recommendation Mahalo Ruben for flying to Maui from Oahu to give his presentation!

Did you know you can virtually tour selected college campuses? University of Portland senior and STEMworks™ Chelsea Kau, highlighted the STEMworks™ College Toolkit and other tools like this to help ease the college-application process! Chelsea also focused on career readiness and provided students with other avenues to explore. Chelsea's College and Career Toolkit featured an apprenticeship program with the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, digital platforms that students can use when they have a college or university email, and how students can set themselves apart! From family to friends, and former teachers to the STEMworks™ team, Chelsea emphasized the importance of having a support system to ease the transition from one chapter to the next. Find Your Vital Records! Certified Copies of Vital Records with Kalani Holokai

What is a vital record? A vital record is "a record of a life event: birth, marriage, civil union, and death" according to Kalani Holokai from the Hawaii State Department of Health. These records are stored in Honolulu and you can request for a copy online! Kalani walked the STEMworks™ cohort through the Vital Records Portal and highlighted important pieces of information the Department of Health needs to fulfill your request. The average processing time is about 6-8 weeks! Information Needed to Obtain Your Vital Record: Your correct mailing address Government issued ID If you don't have a government issued ID, your next of kin must have a valid government issued ID

The Power of LinkedIn Learning with Joyce Rosabia How can you learn new soft and power skills? LinkedIn Learning is an online platform that provides its users with expert-led video tutorials! Cyanotech's STEMworks™ Intern, Joyce Rosabia, has been using LinkedIn Learning since her freshman year in High School. She needed it to learn computer aided design or CAD! Joyce also shared how she uses it for her internship with Cyanotech. Her goal is to learn new skills and update herself on current technologies such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and HootSuite! This is a paid platform that STEMworks™ students have access to as part of their professional development and tech tools.
