  1. BITTY NEEDS YOUR HELP
Bitty came to us from the Lockhart Animal Shelter and we think she is about 7-8 years old with hopefully many more great years ahead as long as she gets proper veterinary care. She is friendly, incredibly sweet, up to date on her shots, on heartworm preventative, spayed, and house trained. Recently Bitty suffered a seizure. We also discovered she has gum disease which may be why she was surrendered. We want Bitty well before we allow her to be adopted, but the minimum cost of her vet bill will be $841.

If you want to contribute to Bitty's care, please consider a donation of any amount, specifying "for vet care" in the notes section of the donation form. We hate to leave a dog in the shelter where he/she is sure to be euthanized because of a health problem that could be corrected with the proper veterinary care. Please help us save Bitty and more rescued shelter dogs like her!
3. SPECIAL PIP CERTIFICATES
We have established a special Paws in Prison Certificate to either memorialize or honor a special person or pet in your life. Your donation of any amount not only helps us to "save more than dogs," but is a special tribute to someone dear to you for any number of occasions such as an anniversary, graduation, birthday, holiday, or the passing of a pet or person over the Rainbow Bridge. In fact, don't forget that Mother's Day is this Sunday!! All you do is follow the instructions described on the Certificate Page of the Paws in Prison website.

4. A LETTER FROM PAROLED INMATE
CARRIE MCCLEOD
Each one of you is a part of each saved life in the Paws in Prison program. If you have passed our name along to others, adopted a PIP dog, volunteered in any capacity, left a 5-star rating on Great Nonprofits, made a financial donation, given a testimonial on your Paws in Prison experience, or encouraged our hard-working staff or Board of Directors, you are an important part of our mission to save more than dogs.

Carrie Mcleod has written a beautiful letter to share with you.

"First and foremost, I feel it's a huge honor that I was chosen to write about my experiences with the Paws in Prison program, not only as a senior dog trainer but as a proud mother of two beautiful children. I've spent the last 4 years in prison on a 5-year sentence. Being away from my children has been extremely difficult. Not only because I miss them dearly but because of the guilt and frustration I've felt because my family has had to deal with the struggles of raising them.

When I was accepted into the program I was broken, angry, selfish, and egotistical to say the least. This program changed my life so dramatically that the words are hard to find how grateful I am. Today I am more selfless, humble, compassionate, and responsible. Working with these furry creatures has taught me how to love others more than myself. I strive every day to be better than yesterday. I have rebuilt my relationships with my family and children and will continue to do so once I am released on May 5th. This program is going with me once I walk out of prison in so many ways. Working with the dogs has taught me how to be there for my kids and to be attentive to their needs and actively participate in every aspect of their lives. I'm so excited to teach them what I know about dog training with both patience and positivity. And to build the bond between my children and me and our doggies.

I'm proud to say that I am a woman and a mother who has outstanding character and integrity. I am a strong leader now because of this program. With these new skills I was taught in this program, I know I can provide for my children. I will be an incredible employee for some company soon (or even my own boss one day :-). I'm so grateful and indebted to all the volunteers and leaders of the Paws in Prison program. Thank you for helping me become the woman and mother God intended me to be.

Carrie Mcleod

Carrie, we are so proud of you and hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day with your children!
5. A LETTER FROM NALA
To My PIP Friends,

Hi! It's been a while since I've seen you. Mom and Dad say it's been 6 whole months! I wanted to check in and let you know that I am loving my family and home! Mom and Dad are amazing! Mom gives the BEST ear scratches and Dad takes me on ALL of the walks! Ezio wasn't lying when he said there were endless frozen bananas and they are DELICIOUS! Especially on a hot day after a nice long walk. Speaking of Ezio, my little brother is quickly becoming my BIG little brother! He was a year old at the end of April and is already so much bigger and faster than me! We have fun running around together in the backyard; I even try to steal piggyback rides from him sometimes but he is so darn quick! I tried to go swimming with him one time, but let's be honest, I'm a princess and that's just not for me.

My favorite things to do are go on walks and chill out at the house with Dad. I have Dad wrapped around my paw. When I sit, he gives me treats. When I lay down, he gives me treats. If I shake his hand, he gives me treats! It's so easy, and it didn't take long at all to get him trained.

Dad wanted me to make sure I told you that we had an Embark (DNA) test done; he says that this explains a lot. Do you know what he means by that? Anyways, the results were: 25.8% Great Pyrenees, 24.2 Chinese Shar-Pei, 21.3% Siberian Husky, 20.1% German Shepherd, and 8.6% Australian Cattle Dog. Mom and Dad also decided my birthday is October 8 (my adoption day) and that I will be 3 years old this year. ....

Paws and Wags,
Nala
