Improving Patient Access - Your Prescription

434 words / 2 min read / For all members

We hear from physicians every single day who are frustrated and distressed about the delays and poor access to medical care that patients face across Manitoba. Our analysis of patient access found that the modest increase in physician visits and surgeries we are seeing barely keeps up with population growth. That means the health system, at this rate, is very limited in its ability to improve access for patients.

Guided by physician feedback, we have drafted a submission to the Manitoba government with bold proposals to make meaningful improvements on improving access for your patients. This includes recommendations to help family physicians and specialists add capacity for more visits, testing and surgeries. Read more here.

Political Shift in the U.S.A.

With the election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. President, we have received inquiries concerned about what this could mean for medical care south of the border. We’ve heard from physicians worried about family in the U.S., and we’ve heard from members concerned about Manitoba’s capacity to provide reproductive care to Americans.

We’ve also heard from physicians about reaching out and recruiting colleagues from the U.S., noting that there is heightened uncertainty about political interference in medical care, such as abortions, fertility treatment and gender-affirming care. There is also the potential for an erosion of insurance coverage with potential changes to The Affordable Care Act.

Nominations have opened for the Doctors Manitoba Awards. You can help recognize and celebrate a colleague's accomplishments. The deadline is December 15.

This week, we are profiling another award bestowed annually to a deserving physician: the Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes a long career of service to patients and the community that embodies the highest standards and ideals of the medical profession and in the promotion of the art and science of medicine through teaching, writing, and administration. This award is often used to recognize a physician approaching retirement or who has recently retired, to celebrate a particularly distinguished career filled with noteworthy contributions to the medical profession.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO WIN: Practicing or recently retired physicians who are current or recent members of Doctors Manitoba. Typically, nominees should have practiced for at least 20 years.

Recent winners include:

Dr. Stephen Kowalski (2024) for leading the way in the field of anesthesiology in Manitoba for more than four decades and in his roles as an intensivist, cardiac anesthesiologist, and general clinical anesthesia practitioner and medical director.

Dr. Maggie Morris (2023) for nearly 40 years as a physician, educator, and leader and for her service as Chair of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and Provincial Lead of Women’s Health, where she oversaw major improvements in care and the design of the new Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Brian Postl (2022) for his work as a clinician, researcher and health system leader and for delivering clinical care in Winnipeg and in Northern remote communities. This first-hand experience guided his efforts to champion equity as the first CEO of the WRHA, a founding member of the Winnipeg Poverty Reduction Council, and in his role as Dean of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.
