Predator Old Vine
Lodi Zinfandel

Ah, the cute ladybug. A docile symbol of good luck that doesn’t bother anyone, cute and loveable. Images of a favorite Rodney Dangerfield movie and Volkswagen paint jobs. So why is it known in the farming world as the Predator? Don’t be fooled by the cute red, seven dots, dome-shaped bodies; in its short one-year lifetime, this voracious little bugger can devour 5,000 insects. Their diet is primarily soft-bodied aphids that are so destructive to farmers’ crops, especially grapes. A quick note for clarity, Ladybugs are not bugs at all but are beetles, a different insect family. The name “ladybug” was coined by European farmers during the Middle Ages, who prayed to the Virgin Mary, “The Blessed Lady,” when pests began eating their crops. After the miraculous insects came and wiped out the invading insects, the farmers named them “beetle of Our Lady.” The name eventually was shortened to “lady beetle” and “ladybug.” The seven-spotted lady beetle is believed to be the first one named for the Virgin Mary; the red color is said to represent her cloak, and the black spots her seven sorrows. But I digress.

Grapes for Predator Wines are sourced from Lodi AVA. Situated between the Sierra Foothills and the San Francisco Bay-Delta, Lodi AVA benefits from warm days and cool evening breezes from the Delta, making the ideal growing conditions. Predator Wines are offered in three bold, fruit-forward expressions: Old Vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Six Spot Red Blend. Rutherford Ranch’s overall philosophy follows a holistic approach to winemaking. Responsible farming is witnessed in the Predator, an eco-friendly strategy to control harmful insects in the vineyards. Using friendly insects and birds to replace herbicides and pesticides is part of their sustainable practices, along with cover crops to enrich the soil. At the winery, they use solar and wind power to reduce their carbon footprint, water reclamation projects, and packaging materials to increase the use of recycled, recyclable, and biodegradable materials in manufacturing glass, closures, and labels.

The 2020 growing season started with very little rainfall in California. This led to an exceptionally dry and moderately cool winter. These two factors accounted for a late start to the growing season. The spring was mild, but a few unseasonably warm days in June pushed maturation back to its usual timeline. Harvest began in mid-August.

Our mature vineyards, with 50+-year-old vines, produce a powerfully rich and flavorful Old Vine Zinfandel.
An intense, full-bodied wine with red fruit, blackberry, and spice. Lingering tannins over a long, smoky finish.
Our sustainable way of growing grapes ensures the land’s health and vitality. "Natural Predation" is an eco-friendly strategy to control harmful critters in vineyards. For example, ladybugs, a natural insect predator, and predator mites, feed on destructive aphids. Ladybugs would suggest pairing this Old Vine Zinfandel with new aphids or mites – but we recommend short ribs or a juicy burger.

“Oh boy, this was delicious! Leather and cherry on the nose really jumped out, and just a bit of licorice. Bold and sweet vanilla with a slightly sticky, long finish. I’ll be buying more of this.” Vivino 5 stars
