Preventing Violence: Resources for Service Providers & Families

People with disabilities face higher risks for abuse. They are often reliant on caregivers in isolated settings and are often left out of education on sexuality, consent, and healthy relationships. And, sadly, they are less likely than their non-disabled peers to have the option to report abuse, or to be believed if they do.

Their rate of violent victimization is nearly four times higher than those without disabilities, according to a 2021 report from the US Department of Justice. If abuse is reported, it is less likely to be prosecuted.

In a Utah needs assessment, nearly all respondents said more training and information is needed on this topic, but less than one-third of them knew where to find it.

Fortunately, you can find more information, plus a list of resources and training opportunities on our blog.

Learning from my Disability

Guest blogger Kirsten Barraclough writes: Did you know that more than 1 in 4 adults in the US have a disability? That’s over 70 million people. ... The disability community is continually working to increase acceptance of all disabled people.

Disability Pride Month celebrates disability identity and community and recognizes disability culture and leadership, along with marking the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) anniversary and the ongoing work to make civil rights real in daily life.
