Note from our Executive Director
Welcome to a Fall like never before. We are all managing the best we are able to in times that are challenging but also are connecting us in ways we've never imagined. Delivering programs virtually is the current way we are able to meet with participants. We are now able to meet with people in the comfort of their homes, they don't have to travel in inclement weather, and are able to meet and form relationships with people they may have never had the opportunity to meet in any other way. We can acknowledge the difficulty of the times and also take an intentional look at the meaningful changes that will improve our lives going forward.

Inside please find good suggestions to stay healthy in Covid-19 times, programs that are coming up, ideas for working at home and updates with Mobility Management. November is National Diabetes Month and National Rural Health Day is November 19th.

Let's celebrate all the dedicated Health Care Providers as they provide our rural areas with quality healthcare, so essential in these times.

In good health,
Bonnie

Health Highlights
Flu Season is Here

We have put together a list of the Madison County Department of Health clinics and local pharmacies where the flu shot may be available in Madison County. We recommend checking with your healthcare provider first to schedule your flu shot.

As stated on the NY State Dept. of Health website, "...getting a flu shot will be more important than ever to help people stay healthy and to ease the burden on our health care system....because doctors don’t know what the risk is of having both flu and COVID-19 at the same time."
November is Diabetes Month
Watch the video to learn more about diabetes.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC):
  • 34.2 million US adults have diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them don’t know they have it.
  • Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Diabetes is the No. 1 cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and adult blindness.
  • In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled.

Upcoming Workshops
In an effort to address the growing number of adults with prediabetes, since 2015 we have offered the Prevent T2 Lifestyle Change Program to residents living in and around Madison County. Through this evidence-based program, many people have met their goals of preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes by implementing a healthier lifestyle by choosing healthier foods and increasing their physical activity.

Starting in January 2021, we are offering the diabetes prevention program virtually using Zoom. We started a Zoom workshop in September and it is proving to be an effective way to deliver the curriculum, engage with others and support one another in meeting individual goals. Plus, it is fun! All workshops are free, but registration is required.
In partnership with Bassett Healthcare and the Madison County Office for the Aging, we are offering numerous evidence-based workshops via Zoom to help people better self-manage their chronic conditions, pain and diabetes. Please share with anyone you think may benefit from these workshops. All workshops are evidence-based and FREE!
